Title: SWMBO is watching.....
Post by: ronnyd on 28 November 2018, 19:16:14
.. an old film called Sapphire on Talking Pictures, made in 1959 and they just wouldn,t  get away now with the absolute racism that pervades through the whole dialogue of the film. Even makes me feel a bit uncomfortable. :o

Whilst at school in the early seventies the headmaster made a comment during assembly that we were fortunate there were no 'coloured children' at the school and he would do all in his power to keep it that way.

Probably lose his job for that these days but back then nobody thought it unusual.  :)

Funny how attitudes change.  A 1950's audience would be shocked and horrified by the mildest of sex scenes in today's cinema.  ::)

Remember Nine And A Half Weeks?   ???

That was considered very racy and on the edge of what was acceptable in the late '80's, but no one would bat an eyelid today.  :)

That's what I thought when I watch Donovan's reef a few years ago.  I remember thinking no wonder that men of generations passed were so over the top macho, mysoginistic and racist with such stereotypes on the big screen acting as role models.

In the fifties you would have a close up of a couple kissing on the beach, then the camera would pan to waves crashing against the rocks.

Little wonder kids in the fifties didn't know what went where. ::)

Ah yes. John Wayne would sort out an argumentative woman by putting her across his knee and giving her a well deserved  spanking. :y

None of this feminist crap for 'Big John'..... ;)

I watch quite a few of the films on Talking Pictures and they're forever having to show disclaimers at the beginning to cover themselves for showing such films/programmes.But they were of their time and attitudes/laws have changed since they were filmed.Nowadays they even have to put a disclaimer at the start of The Dambusters because of the name of Guy Gibsons dog :-X

Nigger.

Back in the day everyone with a black cat or dog called it Nigger. More descriptive than racist.

Back in the day, my black cat was called Sutty
the current black feline rat catcher is called Ebony
(black and thick as a plank of wood)

I agree it wasn't meant in a racist way Opti and iirc the name was also a "proper" name for a shade of brown for clothes etc.,but these days when people are looking for the slightest thing to be offended about a disclaimer is needed to cover the broadcasting station from any kind of law suit.

My mother frequently used a wool officially described as "Nigger Brown" and nobody found it unusual or offensive, just descriptive, as Dr. Opti said.

Changing attitudes though isn't it? As a programme maker or script writer try getting away with such as "Love Thy Neighbour" or "'til Death Us Do Part"these days :D People used to view those and have a laugh.Today they'd be baying for blood!

Last time we visited Scarborough found a shop that was still selling & displaying Golliwogs could not believe the shocked look on some peoples faces, all balmy in my opinion just a toy that has been around for years black or white does not matter to me.

Well this is the thing, Ron.

These days we are made to feel guilty for saying 'politically incorrect' things in the privacy of our own homes. In their own home people should be able to speak and think as they see fit.

Nigger brown paint was an official colour. Available everywhere. Well before my time though.

But why should we feel guilty, Doctor, just to go along with the thought police who wish to control what we think and say?
I saw thatfilm last night  on YouTube, and it simply reflected the way we were at that time: quite refreshing, though!

Even then, though, they had to justify their attitudes with a disclaimer - "I have to think of my business".

There is a desire to 'airbrush history' which I disagree with. Didn't they change Nigger to Digger in a later version? Why do this?

And why do we (via our government) constantly need to apologise for slavery? If this is the case we should demand an apology from the Italians (Romans) who held the reins for 400 years in this country often with much brutality.

.........and the Vikings from the Scandinavian countries can also apologise. ::)

Some need to move on from a victim mentality which seems to bring comfort.

Slavery was down to the greedy plantation owners of America who wanted cheap/free labour on their estates. We only got involved because we were a staging post for the long journey from Africa to America - ships back then couldn't make it in one hop.
Several of the slaves managed to jump ship at London and Bristol, hence the beginning of the ghettoes in those places.
The Africans themselves must share the blame, as they were instrumental is pulling the potential slaves from the jungle: white men could not survive in there, so the natives had to do it for them.
Not our fault, no need to feel guilty.

Yes. But because of links with Liverpool and other cities we need to constantly apologise. :-\

'Comfort', I think means more than you meant it to mean. For comfort, read secure or security, because, imo, the root of all the offence is insecurity. If a black person were to call me a honky, I would shrug it off, not cry racism. Those Australian folk have been calling us 'Bloody wingeing poms' for years. Again, water off a ducks back. Racism, sexism, ageism, any ism you like, is offensive only to people who are insecure with their identity.  :)

I do clinics on Monday evenings if you need your bumps felt.  ;D

The only bump I have is in the trouser department.........If you were a 19 year old swedish girl I would be happy for you to check it out.

However, as you are an elderly gobby scouser of ill repute and  undocumented parentage, you can far cough. :)

Indeed, Capitalism is neither a modern, nor western concept.

Controlling natives were just as keen to get in on the action... Just look at the scale of some of the centuries old buildings in far flung corners of the globe...
