Mrs G has had her astra serviced recently and she always panics when she sees an advisory let alone a 'recommended' or 'urgent' item on the worksheet. In short she is a garage owner's dream.
The latest thing to pop up is the cambelt and so of course she is breaking my balls about it. At 122k it sounds about right that it is due. Sigh. Anyone with experience of it fancy doing it for me? ;D

Belt intervals same as Omega, 4 years or 40,000 which ever is first

depends on what engine is fitted
some are 150km/100k miles 10 years
locking kits are cheap, gates belt kits £80-£120
sort of job an indy garage would do for £200 + vat
but easy enough DIY

Assuming this is a petrol Astra h or older (I don’t know about the j’s) They r the easiest belts you can do. Repair time is 1.5 hours I believe lol

My point is even if u took it to a garage you’d be charged a relatively small amount 👍

1.9 diesel.

Thanks for that, Webby. I shall have to do one soon. Reading Haynes, it's the usual 'remove cam cover upper, as in 2.2, then cam cover central, as in 3.1', etc, making it hard to gauge how hard the job is. I imagine it's similar to the Omega 4 cylinder cambelt change, but time will tell.

I had a 1999 1700 diseasal Astra G. The cam sprocket was connected to the cam itself via a taper ie no woodruff key.
If yours is the case, don't slacken the nut holding the two together otherwise you'll need some proper timing gear.

Thanks for the warning. I understand from Haynes that the Astra H has variable valve timing, which occurs at the cam sprocket to camshaft conection. I presumed the connection from this nifty bit of kit is keyed or in some other way precise.
-
Reading Haynes, it looks straightforward, needing no special tools, just a new belt, tensioner and idler pulley. Changing the timing belt sprockets does need special tools KM-6347 and KM-956-1, but I do not need to remove the sprockets, do I?
-
cant see why you would need to, just slacken the tensioner and remove the belt, change your rollers / tensioner and refit. Simples :y I can't imagine that the Astra H would be in any way special in this regard...

Think you`ll find there`s an engine mount in the way :)

Talked to one of the Astra boys at work & apparently the 1.9 can be 8v or 16v
He advises every 6 years regardless of mileage for cam belt kit & water pump :y

Local Indy just quoted 189 inc VAT and the waterpump :y

Mates rates for the 1.8 petrol was £100 six years ago, so I would say £189 is a decent price :y

I probably should think about doing the cambelt on the Battlebus (and overgrown Astra-G), as no history of its cambelt being done in the last 16yrs/125k.
Now seeing as that nice DTM fella was heard mumbling "I hate this f****** car" at the Battlebus, I wonder if he fancies the challenge ;D

Whilst on the subject of cam belts, Jaime.... mines due in 2019. Do you fancy a few notes in your sky rocket? I’ll do strip down and everything. Just need the belt fitting.
I’m ashamed to say the thought still scares me after, well, u know what 😢😢😢😢

How about you do it whilst I watch over you and double check it all ;)

Yes. I know, because I checked before I went to Jersey, because that joshwyatt bloke needs to borrow it.

Agreed,sounds ok

Cambelt done and dusted with water pump for the agreed price. Car now no longer smokes on cold start and has more power/pickup. I'm guessing that the timing was slightly out beforehand.
