Title: Anybody know a good panel beater in Nottingham
Post by: Marks DTM Calib on 29 November 2006, 22:45:55
Had a slight mishap on the way home from work this evening.

Turned off the main A52 ring road onto Lenton Lane.....

Looked left, nothing coming, looked right, nothing coming, quick glance left again and power on and......

.....ow shit, van coming and bloody fast to (certainly not 30!)brake and.......

.....bang.....he drove up my front bumper and over the passenger side front of the car (nearly rolled the van, blew out front and rear tyres!)

So the estate is totaled......certianly not repairable (it still ran with no ECU lights though but coolant had all escaped...)

The bad news is.....I couldn't find either of the two headlight washer jets.... :-/

Post by: Marks DTM Calib on 29 November 2006, 22:56:19
I'm fine, not realy any impact as I was stationary when he hit.....more of the crushing style of damage.....no airbags deployed because there was no forward impact.

The van driver (delivery firm) was ok to.....very shook up though.

That's cruel, especially after all the work you put in on it, Mark.

Are you sure it's beyond repair?

Did plod turn up at the scene? Will help for the insurance claim if they did.

Glad your ok Mark and the van driver  :y
Sorry about the Omega tho  :(

I did the same a couple of years ago in the merc.....pulled out of a junc turning right......straight into the path of a oncoming car.....in a 60 limit! Merc came out best but still had to be recovered.....but was fixable. Luckily the car i hit was small and wasnt doing 60!

I double/triple check at junctions now.....

It was the opposite side of the main ring road opposite the showcase cinema, there is a slip road into Lenton lane (where teh TV studios are/were).

The car might have been repairable but the van was going so fast that when he hit (and I had braked so the front dived) that he drove over the passenger side corner of the car (there are rubber marks on the bonnet where it tore the tyres off!)

No Police involved............

The really good news is that there is going to be a clean patch on the drive from the leaking battery acid so you will have to clean all of it because of your bump and not because of McB's and my oil leaks. ;D

Like many others have said I am really glad you are unscathed. 3 months ago I would have grabbed that car off you to fix up, but i can't do them anymore - back getting worse.

Anyway, as a gesture of kindness from me, I can offer you a reduction in some driving lessons with yours truly. I have dual controls, which I think may just bee needed - a lot!

you have worried me with the phrase 'I looked left then right....' It is supposed to be right, left then right again. YOU MUPPET! :o

Tip: If you want some car parts:

1. Steal the parts during the night from the victim
2. Set the victim up with you nutter van driver mate, who 'arranges' an accident that happens to impact the part of the car you pinches the parts from
3. Celebrate as the victim is unaware that said parts were pinched before the 'accident'

The level some people will stoop to!

ps..... For sale - two healamp washers.

As everyone else has said...glad everyone concerned got away unscathed.
Cars can be replaced, people can't so count yourself lucky that you're ok (my boss told me this when as a 17 year old apprentice I stuffed his 6 month old Volvo 440 demo up the arse of a 12 month old Rover 416Gti  :-[ )

Oh and have you posted any 'missing' posters on lamp posts for your headlamp washers??  ;D

Cheers

Sorry to hear Mark, but as said by many other replies here, your the important thing here not the car. Damn shame though as I know you put a lot of work into it. :'( Sorry I'm a bit late with this but only just caught up with the threads having been away for a couple of days.

What happens now, another Omega project? :-?

It looks even worse when you stand next to it!

I have to say, the car really withstood the impact very well. As Mark said, "Damn tough cars!"

I don't think even Mr McB could rescue this though. :(

Yep, also saw this today in the flesh. It is actually worse in real life. It isn't really fixable. The damage at the front corner is massive. This is tough tin and an absolute pig to pull straight at the best of times. Can be done I suppose, but beyond my skills this time. Having driven this car before the damage, I can only guess how mark must feel. This was without any shadow of a doubt the fastest omega I have driven. It absoluetly flew!

The main problem now is that front corner which is down by a good 6 inches or more. I did one earlier this year which was down by 3 inches and that was a sod. pics:

Insurance job....been paying in for long enough!

The damage is not that bad because I was stationary and the fact the van drove over the front of the car (due to the excess speed I suspect) its crushed the front pickle fork, inner wing, outer wing, slam panel and lower panel plus bonnet and fittings etc.....way to much for the insurance to fork out for though.

Amazingly, following some measurements, the chassis and suspension all appear fine.....

So, its a case of collect Allenm's car tomorrow, get it running and use that until I can source another estate!

Crikey, Mark, that IS a mess!

I often browse the net for a replacement Omega (still dreamin'), and came across this the other day (11th ad down):

http://www.obedienceuk.com/shop/products.asp?id=4&cat=Cars/Vans

If you don't mind the smell of Alsatian poo (  ;D ) and can still handle a manual box (  ;) ), you might find this of interest!

Might be worth buying it back from the insurance comp.......if you get another 3.0 auto estate....then you've got a driveway full of spare parts  :-/ , except the headlamp washers  ::)

Oh my god,
i just saw that one, thats a bad crash. I'm glad you are OK, shame for the car, but look at the positive side, that you get the opportunity once again to mess about with a new project car. I hope your insurance sorts you out.
Good luck.
