Title: Help choosing a new toolbox
Post by: Jimbob on 22 August 2008, 13:29:00
Decided its time to consolidate my numerous small boxes into 1 larger one.

Looking at something like these (subject to measureing it will fit where I want it to go)

Clarke (http://
http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cfs308-8-drawer-tool-chest/path/clarke-hd-tool-chest-range)

Halfords (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_206443_langId_-1_CarSelectorCatalogId__CarSelectorGroupId__varient__categoryId_31464_crumb_33958-33932_parentcategoryrn_31464)
(much cheaper with trade card - about £80 iirc)

Had a look in Machine Mart at lunch, hey only had the cheaper ones on display, that felt nasty to use.  are the HD ones better?

Any better recommendations?

Cheers

Mine dont move much for that to be an issue - but those both connect to the relavent bottom cabinets on wheels, should I want them to.

I have the cheaper one which has served me well so far.

At the end of the day, its not like it will be moved far and get a massive amount of hammer!

Yours certainly feels better than the flimsy ones I tried today...

Yours is piano hinged lid isnt it?  and are the drawer runners friction or bearing?

Friction ones and it gets a lot of hammer!

You aint wrong!

yours really didnt feel like what I played with  :-?  maybe my memory is shite / they have changed.

I suppose the more 'flimsy' also have the advantage of being lighter

My cheapo clarke on is OK, but bit small.

Keep toying with £144 Halfords Pro one, or a big one on wheels from Costco at £350.

But I'll still end up with tools scattered all over the garage floor ::)

AutoExpress review of Tool Chests here (http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/products/products/201243/tool_chests.html)
Worth a look!!

If I had the money, I would spend about £450.
Britoll Chest (http://www.concepttools.co.uk/p/BRITOOL-10-DRAWER-TOOL-CHEST-4341.aspx)
 :) :) :)

I don't have the money and my toolbox needs to be mobile, so the next toolbox I buy will be a cantilever (http://www.diytools.co.uk/diy/Main/sp-1-403-42804-draper-540-x-297-x-210mm-cantilever-toolbox.aspgood)
Advantage is that all the tools are to hand, except the bottom drawer. Amazing, what can hide in there  :)

I am pretty sure that the clarke and the halfords roller drawer ones are made by draper (thier professional range)

The clarke pro and halfords pro do appear to be the same.

Sorry, earlier I meant the Halford black Industrial.  Just really as the red ones tend to not be deep.

£144 - 80 on trade card ;)

picked up one of the 'better' ones, could barely lift it!

So few tools in it and its static!

Will look again at the cheaper ones, think they will be best.

Not that great a box snap on ones, my dad has had one for years and its falling apart.

When he took them up on the lifetime warranty, they refunded what he paid for it 30 years ago.......snap on really are over rated and only exist thanks to the finance terms they offer the emchanics!

The Snap on guy was here on Thursday, had an Aston Martin Box with plaques, pictures etc, massive wheeled box, £2k!!!!!!!!!!!! However the box he took in PX for the Aston one was £350 and seemed a bargain. We bought a Mac " FOOSE " special off e-bay, complete with 4 drawers of tools for £400, all in individual foam cut outs, lets you know what youve left under a bonnet when you put the tools away!!
I like that idea, if anyone borrows a tool you know whats missing.
