PCSOs do a very worthwhile job in terms of community engagement and feeding back critical information to Safer Neighbourhood Teams, but fact remains they are still not sworn officers, so they are sometimes limited in what they can do in sticky situations..  :-/

PCSO's don't have powers of arrest (Apart from any person powers, eg citizens arrest, which are held by any Civillian).

Sisters boyfriend had real trouble getting in - passed all the test with flying colours (for Gloucester const) but then he didn't quite fit the 'profile' they were looking for to fulfill their ethnicity quota >:(

I agree they do a worthwhile job -- within their remit. I do, however, question their operational value. A Special, with full powers and decent training is often a better liason twixt community and Police. They generally live in the communities they serve and can get better intel as the local butcher than any "accepted" PCSO, who are often just paid lip service.

I feel the money spent on PCSO's is far better utilised in recruiting Specials or Regulars who can do the full job ( sufficiently trained and resourced of course).

PCSO's are a sort of "inbetween", and could easily get out of their depth with today's "characters", who have scant respect for those who can enforce the law, let alone those who get stuck in the middle without adequate powers or training.

But -- don't mind me -- I am a moaning old git living in the 70's  :D

Yep james she did not leave the store so in effect did not commit a crime...yep we had 2 cars and a paddy wagon but when they did their checks she was not wanted for anything outstanding so they let her on her way sainsburys told her she was banned and we banned her from the park....

I guess in theory if she didn't leave the store it's a tricky one... but the intent was still clearly there!

Yeah, but to prove the intent she has to actually leave the premises with the stolen articles.

Ive got video footage of me wrestling with a shop lifter for about 10 minutes. He never made it out of the store, but the CD radio cassette he had hidden in his coat was a give away that he didn't intend to pay for it. The Police were really good, they took him away, he admitted the offence because he was a drug addict and wanted out as soon as possible.

Sadly I fear its not money well spent.

I have always been of the belief that you need to address the core issues affecting productivity before ever expanding or throwing extra money at anything.

So, address the excess paper work and get the Police doing what they are best at, Policing. Then review the situation before throwing more people at it and over loading the already struggling force with new recruits.

Its a rather stupid idea

Plus, where is the cash coming from, were already spending way more than we can afford to on mega in-efficient public services (NHS is the classic example!).

Golden ruls of anything like this, you never throw extra resources at an in-efficient organisation a they will just 'consume' the extra without generating any extra output

Valid points for the most - but I would also add that they need to work on the retention of the ones they currently have, in terms of development, opportunities, etc.

Which adding more personel wont do and it shouldn't just be pay rises as the public budget cant support that. They need to be getting job satisfaction which I suspect is sadly lacking at the moment.

Fix the existing before throwing more man power at it!

Of course, it doesn't help that overseas police forces (especially Canadian ones, for some reason) see the poor working conditions, not particularly good pay and overwhelming paperwork as an opportunity to send recruiting teams here to grab those officers we have spent serious money training.

Some probationers get lured away as soon as they've finished their basic training.
