Title: Todays Task
Post by: TheBoy on 21 August 2008, 21:24:49
Fix the bloody shower!

Awoken in the night by the sound of fast dripping water.  Soon located it to it dripping out of the shower valve.  Had to turn off the water - cold was easy, couldn't work out how to do the hot.  But turning off cold stopped the leak.

Having remembered by mum had a similar problem with her Aqualisa shower a few years ago, and spookily enough discussing it at work a couple of weeks ago, I suspected it was the cartridge.  No idea what type mine took, though, so had to strip it down and check.  As suspected, it was the cheapie manual type.

So, woke up this morning to her asking me what I'd done to the shower ::).

Had to go to Birmingham for work today, so had her ringing around plumbers merchants trying to locate the cartrudge in stock somewhere, and I swung by and picked one up on my way home.

Sorted out isolating the hot water, then changed the cartidge.  All went OK, though removing seal at back of shower body was a bit tedious, and resealing the wall plate was never going to be my strong point (and will have a 2nd go tomorrow - might have wiped away a shade too much), but its cured the leak :)

Pizza on order, I'm starving!

:y Well done Jaime; a more prompt repair than Maria`s bath overflow, especially as it seems that James has to test Archimedes` principle every time he`s there! ;D

Had to do a quick repair on holiday with a sledge hammer - reversed into a block at Durgan while turning around and bent my stabilser bracket. My uncle sledged it flat

Saying that, not enough room in my shower for a real decent swing!

Normaly the hot shut off is achieved by the use of a gate valve on the cold water feed to the immersion heater given the age of house you have (and assuming its not a naff rather combi!)

Yup, you were right, and that was what I was looking for.  Builders fitted one shelf in airing cupboard, and all the stopcocks are below this, except the one I was looking for, which was covered in blankets and all sorts of other crap she rams in there, so it wasn't until I was more awake that I found it :y

Oh, and no stupid combis here :D

Also found out why the immersion heater has never worked (got a Potterton boiler here, so always good to ensure immersion works!).  As well as the controlling switch in the kitchen, there is another switch on the airing cupboard - also fitted out off site above the shelf, and right by missing stopcock.

I should add, as the hot water tank is mounted 18" off the floor (not sure why? Better head?), that shelf is quite high, and not easy to see above it too well.

Head depends on the height of the cold water cistern.

A local means of isolating the immersion is a good idea. Might have been better to place it in a more obvious location though.

I reckon if gas prices keep going up it'll get more economical to use an immersion during the summer months. Probably already is on a dual rate tariff.

My mum doesn't have gas or oil, everything is electric.

She heats 2 bloody great hot water tanks overnight.  She also has a 3 phase leccy boiler - that makes the streetlights go dim when that fires up in the night :o

Had one in a holiday cottage in the lakes back in Jan.

1st thought....Oh shite!
2nd thought, this is ok, little slower than normal, but food is good.
3rd thought, I want one!

Just take a bit of habbit changing and getting used to.

Wouldnt like the bill though :(

Some people watch too much crap 'lifestyle' programmes on telly, and want things like AGA because trinny and susannah say so. Gay.

Ding! another item on the list. ;D

My mum has one (oil fired) and the burner is just a large wick that burns oil.

I can attest to the fact that it bakes the most rather fantastic pineapple upside down cake, lemon drizzle cake, blackberry and apple crumble, etc... the list is LONG, believe me, and I know the AGA helps because she couldn't bake for toffee before.

Guess why I'm rarely on the forum at dinner time on Sundays?

Sorry, AGAs aren't gay, and are great for cooking.  People who have them in inappropriate houses because some style tv programme says so, they are the gays.

Should have said earlier. It was her village produce show today. She made some very nice ginger cake. :-*
