Title: Radio
Post by: Shackeng on 05 July 2019, 19:23:55
Can anyone recommend a small DAB radio/cd player with separate wireless speakers? Does such a thing exist? Required to replace the dying kitchen box. :y

Will it need to be made of Bakelite and pick up the BBC world service? :)

If you get a valve wireless you can pick up ITMA, Take It From Here and the Goons!

You can get Bluetooth speakers that will pair with your phone and whatever you can play on your phone will play on the speakers

As far as I can see, Chris, a Bluetooth transmitter plugged into the headphone socket of the radio is the way most people do it. Two inconveniences with that: You'll lose the radio speaker and you'll need to charge up the transmitter.

Thanks Steve, I had hoped that something that I envisaged would be avlbl nowadays. We have a radio in our breakfast area, but it is difficult to hear in the adjoining  kitchen with extractor fan(s) going. I guess a second radio is the only viable option. :-\

As we mainly only listen to Internet Radio we have a Bose Home Speaker 500 in the sitting room, paired to an additional Bose speaker in the kitchen, so only one playing device required.
Although in saying that, for playing CD's we have a Panasonic DAB radio/CD player in the conservatory, paired to various other speakers throughout the house. The Bose is quite fussy about what it pairs to (Bose only I believe), but the Panasonic is more than happy to pair with additional speakers (Sonos etc.) dotted about around the house. Each speaker needs to be within reach of your home wifi.  :y

So, in short, you could buy a system and just add speakers for the other rooms. They can all be controlled by Alexa (the spy in the house  ::)) if you so wish, or your smart phone, or in the case of the Panasonic, by using the remote. You could buy a Amazon Alexa Echo or Dot/Google Home and just add additional speakers (that's how we started).
If it's just for Internet Radio it's very easy to set up multiple speakers in different rooms from one device but if you want the CD function you will need a Radio/CD player with Wi-fi/Bluetooth compatibility.  :y

Thanks very much. Sounds like the way to go. I'm not convinced that the wifi range is great, but as the kitchen is only the other side of the wall from the router, it may work. :y

I am puzzled that a radio is not available that can transmit its signal (Bluetooth?) to a speaker without the necessity for wifi/internet radio. ???

I'm sure it can be done very easily, it's just that I listen to radio channels online.  :y
This is my take on it (but I could be talking shite)  ;D

Bluetooth is aimed at short distance, single Bluetooth usage, so you can play radio/music from a smart phone to a single Bluetooth speaker to amplify the sound from the phone.  If you buy a Bluetooth/Wi-fi Radio, you will most likely be prompted to set it up on a smart phone (via wi-fi or Bluetooth), as it is aimed at streaming music, hence you would have used up your single Bluetooth connection. My Radio/CD has its own Bluetooth/Wi-fi built in and searches for other Bluetooth devices, even when my smart phone isn't present, so I assume I could pair an additional Bluetooth speaker in another room to it. **I'll try it out later if I get time**. This is basically what you want.
We have an Amazon Echo Bluetooth'd to an additional Bluetooth speaker elsewhere and this works fine, but you did specify a CD player as well so this set-up wouldn't suit you.

With wi-fi, you can add multiple speakers provided that they are all capable of seeing your home wi-fi router network.

Shame we don't live closer to each other, as you'd be welcome to borrow my Bluetooth Radio/CD player and speaker to try out at your place.  :y

**Edit:
Just tried it and the Bluetooth radio/CD search found the Amazon Echo, which is a Bluetooth speaker, albeit with Alexa built in, so this set-up would suit your requirements.  :y
