I've travelled past them many times as a child & adult, it'll seem very strange when i travel that way again.
Almost sad in a way

Talk about balls of steel.  :o Made me feel ill just watching it. A couple of hundred feet up, ladder beyond the vertical, no safety harness and a ruddy great pack of tools on his back. The last survivor of the days before H&S when men were men and they knew the value of a day's work.

RIP Fred.

Kevin

I hold Fred Dibnah high in my estimation. He's an inspiration & i admire him greatly. As regards the Tinsley Towers it's amazing what folk hold dear. Without actually being at a power stn. you do'nt realize the scale of them. I've delivered to Retford Power stn. & these things are collosal close up. The closeness of these to the M1 explains why people have become attached to them. Given thier proximity to j34 Tinsley viaduct almost everyone coming in or out of Sheffield/Rotherham will have seen them. I only hope the site isn't going to be "developed" into yet another repeat retail park.

Good old Fred, they've even put up a statue of him on the precinct right next to the mill engine that's been there for years. Very appropriate in my opinion.

The Tinsley towers were quite impressive and probably had a reasonable level of historic value to given thiere date, style etc.

For me, the most important thing they did was block out a view of a pretty run down area of Sheffield and the delights of Rotherham beyond!

To put it in context, would it take him 25 days of whingeing and excuses before he went up 25 foot of ladder to fix someone's telephone line?

I think not, IIRC he was the bloke who climbed chimneys on his way home from the pub for a bit of fun.

I remember that on one of his programs, a 'rival' had left his ladders on a chimmney so Fred went up and left him a note......mad, crazy, traditional 'British' character

Fred, like the cooling towers have gone and another piece of British industrial history has gone with them. :'( :'( :'(

Very sad, but that is progress apparently! ::) ::) ::) ;)
