Found this on top of the battery of the Astra I bought last Sunday for my daughter. There's something in the boot too, under the carpet, ahead of the spare wheel well, about the size of a fag packet. Any idea what it might be?

It's a "black box" TELEMATIC tracker that insurance companies use for young drivers etc or big companies who want to know where the fleet cars are
I'd remove it , but that's up to you

If there's a spare 5-post relay space in the fuse box, you could always try one of THESE (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Tracking-Relay-GPS-Tracker-Device-GSM-Locator-Remote-Control-Anti-theft-H6T4/401824370344?hash=item5d8e994ea8:g:tBoAAOSwaz9c0f2-)
