Quite a bit of focus on the subject of poverty across Europe. From memory 22% of UK and 26% of Spain live at or below poverty line.
A 53 year old neighbour only gets occasional farm work in the winter months. The rest of the time he lives on dole of 430 euros a month.
I suspect the meteoric rise of the gig economy hasn't helped . Those in work on contract, can afford and no doubt feel they deserve a takeaway delivered by a zero hours worker.
Condoned by a “Conservative “ government. Swung the other way no doubt by a “Labour” government.
What does the team think?
-
To me zero hours works because it allows companies to dance around employment laws and while some on such a contract have complained how many of them are then fiddling the taxman?
-
Zero hours is a side effect of the just in time economy.
I work for, via an agency, for a large global company. They don't pay breaks (we get 3x the legal minimum ie 60 mins instead of 20 legally required for a 12 hour shift), but because we aren't productive, they aren't paid. Also run at minimum staffing levels to pre planned schedules with no contingency for things like the weather or atc falling over... Utterly insane way of operating in aviation, but that's what corporate greed gets you.
The only saving grace is that my agency pays holiday pay as part of my hourly rate which is technically illegal, but does mean that I get holiday pay for every hour worked.
Might be a good time to get a proper job :-\

Does a vacancy as a f*uck buddy for wealthy but sexually frustrated middle aged women sound appealing? :)
You may need to move to the U.S and live in a large house with a heated pool. :)

Define middle aged ;D

Well.....wealthy women in the US like to be called girls until they are 60. ;D
You may need to provide lubrication as it may not be naturally available. ;)

Getting back to Varche's serious subject........
Zero contracts are immoral and should have no place in our society. I used to issue, or have issued, hundreds of contracts which were for fixed hours. They conformed completely to Employment Law, and gave our workers the rights they deserved, that had been fought hard for over many decades, with full Union involvement. We, the employer, lived by those rights and still our business was very successful.
To expect anyone to be loyal and committed to an organisation that gives them no security or loyalty is plain wrong. How can that be good for business? We relied totally on the loyalty, commitment and honesty of our staff to do the job in hand and produce, by way of good application, the final profits we all required to keep our jobs. With zero hours contracts the business is going to lose that valuable staff input, and weaken it's ability to produce sustainability. Any business that cannot support fully retained, on fixed hour contracts, and honouring Employment Law and Rights is not worth it.
No, the Employement Laws must again be tightened to give anyone applying themselves, and worthy of any position within a business, their full rights with fixed hours contracts. The business, management, and staff then can have no doubt about when and how everyone is employed with loyalty shown in every direction.
Zero contracts must be made illegal. ;)
-
The MSM have depicted zero hour contracts as a Tory invention, but they have been around a lot longer than people think and I had a job with one for a couple of years around 2003/4. ;) Luckily the company was usually busy, so I rarely had any downtime. :y
The worst aspect of the contract was that if the company didn't need me, I wasn't supposed to work elsewhere. I think they expected me to sit by the phone just in case. ::)
Sod that, I went off agency driving on the odd occasions it happened. ;)
-
It is a funny thing. The haves are quite happy to spend a tenner on say a Costa coffee and cake despite knowing the workers are treated badly with things like having training costs deducted from pay.
It is like a two tier society.
-
I have a 40 hour contract, but it is neither permanent nor guaranteed and I fully expect to get a phone call or email on Oct 31st asking for my uniform back ::)
That said, being am agency employee there's nothing to stop me taking extra shifts doing baggage resilience for rival companies ;D
A proper contract buys a lot of loyalty, the mere promise of one does not...

Very true. Labour said they were evil and only used by exploitative greedy employers, unacceptable face of Capitalism blah blah blah, and, that they would outlaw them
Then someone discovered that over 60 Labour MP,s were employing people on zero hour contracts. ;D ;D

Yep, there is no such thing as a true, to all principles, Socialist. Hypocrites everyone one of them! ::) ::) ;D ;D ;)
That is why I class myself as a Red Conservative, as I believe in a lot of Socialist theories and principles, but recognise that in practice the application of Conservatism is best overall. A lot of that comes from growing up in a politically mixed family, with some extreme views, and I picked the middle route (well, usually!! ::) ::) ) :D :D :)

Capitalism / conservatism is perfectly compatible with an outlook of being caring and decent. For a long time the left have tried to convince the world that they have ownership of these things and Capitalism is evil. In my experience in the real world, the truth is very often close to the complete opposite.

Indeed, most philanthropists are self made hard core capitalists ;)
