Title: A2 Stainless bolt...
Post by: TheBoy on 30 August 2019, 17:44:12
...despite me checking the thread length with a useless egay seller, they have sent me some bolts with insufficient thread on.

Can I use a normal die to put a longer thread on?

Yes, you won't make it any worse.

Why A2 stainless, rather than a decent quality steel bolt?

Which are cheaper, stronger, easy to use and readily available.

It was about die being man enough, is stainless harder?

Whilst I quite like boats, I wouldn't say I was in to them.

Anyway, back to the question....

A sharp die will be fine if the bolt is made of decent material. Which it won't be, so I'm changing my original answer to no.

.......

A normal split die or die nut will cut the thread ..... stainless is actually softer  :)

How much thread do you need to cut? Will a washer or 3 not make up the difference?

Plenty of tapping compound, (Rocol or something nice and gooie like that). The biggest die and stock you can get for the size of thread and some extension tubes. Good luck. :y 300 ss is harder than 400 but is better quality.

Of course, just brush it on  the unthreaded part of the bolt and do 1/4 turn at a time. Spent most of my working life doing crap like that. :P

M5 x 100mm.  But it needs to have 60mm thread on it as there are bolts in the middle to clamp one half of the contraption, and then more bolts further down to (separately) clamp the other half of it.

Bolts I was sent have about 20mm thread, so I need to cut 40mm of thread in each of 5 bolts, with a Machine Mart tap&die set.

I'm told it has to be A2, and that doesn't spec thread length

I think you're going to struggle to buy an M5x100 bolt with a 60mm thread length. I also think if you do find such a thing you'll have to be very careful not to break them, especially if stainless.

you can get  A2 STAINLESS STEEL all THREADED RODS M6 X 1000MM 5 PACK from screwfix £12.69
I use it as part of my rotary drum water filtration system and it's not rusted
m5 is an odd size to use for long bolts
is it that critical to use m5 ? weight issue ?

Get in touch with Grampian fasteners, everything they do is suitable for the oil industry, in the North sea so a very tough environment, and is also suitable for the food industry

Bolts I was sent have about 20mm thread, so I need to cut 40mm of thread in each of 5 bolts, with a Machine Mart tap&die set.

So you need/want a set screw ie a 'bolt' that is threaded for its whole length  :y

You'll probably end up with a bolt favouring a dogs leg if you cut that much thread with a MM die  ;D

I'm not back in work till the week end but I'll look to see what we have  ;)
