A car that had a "race proven" engine a sports gearbox, positive rack and pinion steering with a body torsionally stiffer than a Land Rover, surely we're on to a winner here? Well the engine was the 1800 MGB lump and the gearbox a 4speed TR6 unit and the car was called Marina

All I can do is ;D ;D ;D ;D ;) ;)

Not forgetting the lever arm suspension ::) My dad had several of these cars.
He also briefly had an Ital, which I think had telescopic dampers & which he said gave improved handling.

Nothing wrong with Marinas! Many of us on here had one.
They went like stink compared to the previous generation like the Morris 1100, Morris Oxford, Standard 10. ;D ;D
Never had the pleasure of travelling in an Ital :o
-
Had two Marinas a jubilee edition & an estate don't recall any real problems with either of them.

Just watched the old Top Gear with the BL cars on a £1200 budget( the one where they filled the interior with water!) ;D should have bought a Marina . :y

What an excellent car! :)
Especially when wrapped up in the Coupe body finished in the fetching BL Mustard colour! :y
Oh and don't forget the aftermarket black gloss stripe down the middle of the bonnet, complete with brush marks! ;D

My wife...well before we were married...had a Marina in a fetching orangey/beige.
I remember laughing at her one day when she rang from work to say she couldn't drive it home as the " driver seat had fallen through the floor" :o
When I got there sure enough both back seat mountings on the drivers seat had rusted through and drivers seat was flat on the floor at the back and tipped up at the front .
Hasty repair with some bits of plate washer and we got it home to have it welded back although the entire floor pan was worse than a 2 year old pear.
We quickly sold it on ::)
-
I recall one near home that was nicknamed the 'Mars Bar', as it had been fetchingly repainted in dark Brown Hammerite
-
The only race that engine would be "proven" in is one to the ocean floor on the end of a suitable length of chain. :D
They didn't mention those lovely front lower trunnions from the Morris Minor either. I had hours of fun with those. ::)
