Title: Service vehicle soon
Post by: STEMO on 27 September 2019, 11:25:08
That's the message I'm getting when I start up my astra, so you'd think it needed a service, yes? No  ;D
Being experienced with these things, I know it needs a glow plug (about £130 on these  :(), so I'll wait till next service/MOT at the end of the month.

Now, whilst perusing the same model locally on the trader, as you do, I noticed that two out of the 16 available had the very same message. And they were the ones with the ignition on, others may have had it too. I wonder what tale these dealers will tell potential buyers, or even if the dealers are aware of what the message means.

When these 2.0 Vauxhall diesels get to around 50,000 miles, they tend to need glow plugs about once every six months, until you've replaced all four.

Another ballache would be the servicing garage charging me to read the fault as well, but my local usually doesn't, esp if I've already told him what he's gonna find.  ::)

Wow £130 just for glow plugs. Is that for the 4 fitted?

No, just the one. I gave him a funny look when he told me last time, but he showed the trade receipt from Autovaux.

They have a pressure sensor in them to monitor cylinder pressures, so quite pricey.

This is a common approach these days with multiple firings of the injectors every cycle.

Think I have the same issue on Airfix 1. If the plugs are that pricey I shall ignore it until it wont start, then burn the fickin thing.

The glowplugs for my Mondeo's transit engine were about £11 each IIRC.  :y

So a glowplug for a French tupperware car should be about 50p!  ;D

The glow plugs for my Astra G were about £15 each from Vauxhall, as were the glow plugs for my sister-in-law's Astra H but a neighbour had an Insignia and they were over £100 too .... we were surprised at the cost as they were being supplied by another neighbour who is also in the motor trade.

Do they shear as easily as Merc's slim line plugs do? I managed to shear one on my R Class using a 1/4" socket  ??? :(

Plugs are supposed to be changed at 80000 on the mighty Signum.

Front 3 are easy to get at. Rear 3 are a pain in the arse. Mileage is now 92000 but all is well so I'll follow the " if it ain't broke don't fix it philosophy" until I get a problem. :)

Leaving them doesn't knacker the coil packs does it? I know the DI packs on GM era Saab's can go bad with poor sparks being a contributing factor.

I do hope not because there is an individual coil pack for each cylinder.  :-\

I'd say that's better! The Saab one was a single unit for all four plugs and a new one was about £180.  :o
