Is there an alternative to operate two computers with one mouse/keyboard and monitor?

TeamViewer, when you absolutely want the Chinese to have unfettered access to your PC: https://thehackernews.com/2019/05/teamviewer-software-hacked.html

If you want it as if you are sat in front, then its a KVM switch or 2 screens/keyboard etc.
If a bit of lag is unimportant, then a whole series of remote control apps available, some free, some commercial. But any PC offering a remote control service has the potential to offer that to everyone on the tinterweb.
It begs the question, if they are side by side, cant you just dump one?

Therein lies a problem :-\

I assumed there would be an issue, hence asking the question. But is the solution to that issue less hassle than a KVM or laggy remote control software.

I'll talk the problem over with you sometime, but I don't think there is a solution. :'(

Can you turn one machine into a virtual machine and run it on the other?

Afraid not.

Actually, knowing the circumstances now, that is a possibility, eg VMware Workstation (as the hypervisor) and VMwares P2V converter. Other makes available.
But I think you're sorted anyway.
