Title: Strange Traces Of Oil
Post by: amba on 04 December 2019, 15:45:47
Opened bonnet today to top up screen wash and give engine usual cursory look ..noticed what I can only describe as an oil leak but its showing around the bagpipe connections only on the passenger side 2/4/6 bank where the top curved pipe from the throttle bodies joins the metal separator all around the large jubilee clip.

Really fresh oil and a enough to require wiping away with a rag but after short drive today it has reappeared.

Breathers were cleaned less than 1k ago along with fresh oil change ...never ever had it before and why is it only the 2/4/6 bank ??

Any guidance as to cause as will take it al apart and thoroughly clean but not for a while as have a drive upto Lincoln in the morning to Christmas Market with swtsmbo

Could it be getting "thrown" there by the auxiliary belt or one of the pulleys after being picked up from elsewhere on the engine?

Possibly but looking at how its covered the joint where jubilee and pie join I would of expected further oil splatters above the pipe...nothing at all.

Its almost like oil is leaking out of the bagpipe joint ...but that just cant be ..surely

They all do that...

Not unusual to find an inch of oil in the bagpipes.

Thanks DG....never knew that ..So does oil lay in the bottom of the pipework and get sprayed around inside ?

Strange its only on 1 side so maybe the jubilee isnt fitting tight...will remove the entire pipework next week and give it all a good clean, then check jubilee clips

It drains down out of the breathers/plenum and through the throttle body ;)

Not sure if it is a side effect of engine wear or simply the closed breather system. Or both :-\

Understand and thanks for concise explanation.

So the fact is leaking at union of top curved pipe and metal separator would indicate jubilee isn’t holding firm

Or that the pipe isn't fitted correctly... Easily misfitted as it snags on the bottom of the intake ;)

Great thanks and after spending a few minutes with torch earlier have found the problem.

The 2/4/6 side intake pipe from the throttle body to the metal separator has a split and is causing oil to track down the back of the pipe and collect on the ridge where the jubilee fits.Doudt its repairable given where its split so need to source a replacement...…..time to post in wanted unless any body reading this can help

Get plenty of tape around it for the time being as it will also be acting as an air leak (unmetered air getting in)

Ah, I didn't know that. Still, gives more options than just getting one from a 3.2.

2.6/3.2 don't have a sensor fitted to them, so no hole for one...

Nor does the o/s on the 2.5/ 3.0 iirc.

It’s the N/S or UK passenger so no sensors just curved pipe .
Have wrapped some duck tape around it for the time being until a spare comes my way .
Thanks for help guys

Ive chucked lots of them in the bin in the past because no-one ever wants them. Should probably have kept a couple spare for myself, but space is limited.

anyone who plans on keeping theirs forever will soon have to start thinking hard about these sorts of things. in years to come parts will get harder to find .basic service items will more or less always be around but more model specific stuff will get rarer.trim pieces, certain sensors ,control boxes etc.
ive thrown many stuff away years ago for cavs and vivas that are nigh on impossible to find now.

So true and Im sure we all fall into that category of needing bits that are long gone now so really grateful for the couple of guys who break them on here.

Pointless trying breakers yards as most havent a clue what you are talking about let along the ability to remove it without destroying it in the process...and few breakers if any will allow you beyond the sales counter now...H&S

and that means.....
goodmorning have you got this piece of plastic trim please?   guy says yes and goes to get it. brings it back with all its clips smashed off cos theyve just ripped it off.
will this do he says. !!!!!!!
there are still a few yards around here that let you in but they give you a high vis and you have to wear safety boots but this will get less and less in the coming years
