Title: SRS-AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT
Post by: terry paget on 22 February 2020, 09:37:46
The above message appears on the dash of a Volvo V70 on e-bay.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-V70-2-4-turbo-petrol-/372950376682?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10
In my Rover Streetwise handbook it recommends changing the airbags after some interval, but of course by that time the car is worthless so no-one would ever do it. Also I know that on Vauxhalls a similar light can be brought on by careless repair that can only be turned off with a Tech2.
My question is - is iabove light an MOT fail matter?

Yes it would be a fail :y

I believe anything relating to airbags/safety kit is indeed an MOT failure.

If you are seriously interested in running a V70, I'd recommend the iCarsoft diagnostic kit. They're about £110 but it can read all the Volvo systems including airbags/SRS.

I had this come up on a SAAB I owned and it turned out to be a loose plug under the driver's seat. That said, I think failed sensors are not uncommon

Thanks for the advice gentlemen. Car is sold now, but with MOT till June I could run it till then to see if I liked the car.
There is a Honda estate being auctioned current bid about £250 with MOT till October I'm watching too. I know I mustn't buy an old  car now I've stopped doing serious repairs, but a man can dream.

I note the Honda auction ending tomorrow has LPG kit disconnected. Would it run normally on petrol in that state?

it's done 185 thousand miles  :o and rusty subframe  :-X

why not look for something with warranty and 12 months MOT
astra design estate £995 (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2005-Vauxhall-Astra-Design-16v-Twinport-1-6-Estate-Petrol-Manual/274277749001?hash=item3fdc3a5109:i:274277749001) get the seller to do the cambelt in with the price  ;)

Legacy 75k miles ,11 months mot (good history) £995  (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2003-SUBARU-LEGACY-GL-2-0-AWD-ESTATE-11-MONTHS-MOT-LOW-MILEAGE-75K-HISTORY-2-KEY/274280045625?hash=item3fdc5d5c39:g:nXUAAOSwx5VeTwbC)

Yes I know. Thanks for the good advice, Dave. As explained, I have a perfectly sound Omega estate, but I fear it will fail its MOT in April, as the LH exhaust manifold (or something thereabouts) is blowing. I can hear it, but not see it, tester may pass it with an advisory, but it will probably fail on emissions. I shall then need another estate, DG recommends a Vectra estate, but there are not many nearby on e-bay, and as DG says, the Vectra is boring. Hopefully I am learning while I dream.

Sometimes Terry, boring is the expedient  way to go. ;)

Exactly, minimum fuss motoring requires a level of inexcitement. This is why Toyota doesn't really do sports cars.

there's a man who has never driven an MR2. Similarly, Supras are excellent GTs.

Toyota develop sports cars the same way they do any other car, with a rigid list of requirements. Unlike British sports car manufacturers, Toyota don't consider poor reliability to add character.

Fair point, and quite true, although neither of those hold any appeal to me...

nor me, and the new AE86 would have been much more appealing without the ghastly flat four.
