Title: Oil on coil pack
Post by: Sjs on 08 March 2020, 16:23:44
Just following the tech help on changing spark plugs. All going perfectly until I removed the coil pack. Three of the coil wells are dripping with oil. I am thinking this is a bad thing. 2001 2.2 engine.

Yeah, not good. Will need a new cam cover gasket.

Just replace the cam cover gasket  ;)

If you're capable enough to replace the spark plugs then you're capable enough to replace the cam cover gasket.

I just assumed it would be a technically difficult job. I will have a hunt through the tech help and see how it’s done. Thanks

The how2 in the maintenance section, is very good.  Follow it and you will not have any problems. I found that the most awkward fiddly part on the 2.2 I had was unclipping the cam sensor connection.

The only piece missing in the how2, is to check the metal pipe on the back right side of the engine, for crud in it.

This is taken from the 2.0 cam cover replace, in the maintenance section.

Inspect the metal breather pipe for clogging of any contamination. if contamination present then from underneath the car undo and remove the breather pipe from the main block. Once removed you must clean thoroughly to unblock contamination. Once this is done then replace but add a smear of gasket sealant to breather and replace. Do up the two bolts until tight.

2.2 how2 http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90597.0 (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90597.0)

The pipe mentioned above is in this how2. very bottom picture http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90551.0 (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90551.0)

Hope this helps.

If you don't have one you might need to borrow or buy a low range torque wrench. The bolts on the cover need to be evenly torqued to (is it?) 8Nm. Ovetightening warps the cover and the gasket will leak. You likely have a set of TX sockets if you are able to unscrew the ignition module to reach the plugs.

Thanks to everyone for the advice, I found the step by step guide and it seems pretty straightforward. I will have to buy a torque wrench and check out the parts required.

the four cylinder covers are a better design, and a lot less susceptible to those problems than V6s

which theoretically shouldnt happen even on a v6 as the bolt holes have a metal sleeve in them anyway and common sense should prevail but obviously some buffoon with a heavy hand can always damage anything !   lol

That's me.  I'm a chartered manufacturing engineer and have spent 30 years putting in assembly lines and ensuring that things are put together right, but simple mechanics at home. I think I'm pretty crap. Every job I do I break something. Or cut myself or end up swearing.
