Title: BMW Engines
Post by: Sir Tigger KC on 14 April 2020, 23:00:55
So in another thread we mentioned the BMW straight six engine and in the strange and slightly scary way that the internet works this Top Gear article about BMW engines (https://www.topgear.com/car-news/retro/sometimes-strange-places-bmw-engines-have-ended?fbclid=IwAR0O8xPoWehQrU1ig3wRmvmcSasB8vW9n8quPtoHJVsG4w_bAUDJb4BxT1E#1) popped up on my Facebook feed.  :)

Warning: A small passage within this article may cause offence to some and may be considered downright heretic by many! :o  >:(   ::)  :-X

I've owned two BMWs-both the "shark nose" shape and both petrol-and blown the engines up in both of them,so would never consider another.Been in several fairly recent examples and found them universally uncomfortable enough to make me glad to get out of them.

.

Got to agree the new grill looks cheap & nasty and just too big for the vehicle.

I might be wrong though....  :D

Petrol or diesel, the straight six definitely pulls stronger than a V6 8)

not sure
the M70 V-12 SOHC engine for example

To give you a comparison, the later 3.0d (in 35d twin turbo guise) wouldn't/doesn't shame itself when pitched against a full on M3/M4 up to just under a ton.  ;)  Book speeds on websites show them to be close, but in reality they are very close.  :y They are both limited to 155mph but the bmw D3 3.0d will push on to 170mph.
As said previously, it's a cracking engine.  :y

I suspect the 35d would probaby win the traffic light grand Prix a lot of the time, given they usualy come in x-drive guise, and it rains a lot here.  ;D

My BMW is a 330d (E90) and is 231 BHP (totally standard). It has done 157k miles and runs as sweet as a nut. It's a 6 speed manual. Since I bought the car 4 years ago the only thing its had apart from routine servicing is a brake pad sensor. Fuel economy is great … mid/high thirties on local journeys and high forties on the motorway. It has had a full service every year of it's life regardless of mileage which has obviously helped it. Before this I had a 2001 Omega 2.2cdx for eight and a half years.

My old 1999 E39 530d had a fairly basic 3 litre straight 6 diesel, but it pulled and sounded like Deltic train engine and was fairly economical as well.  :y

I find it hard to get my head around 2 pistons sharing the same cylinder bore.

It's witchcraft. :)

Imagine three in a bed....wow, that was quick......one above, one below, one in the middle. Now multiply this 18 times.  ;D
