Masks.
I see our UK government advisers say you don't need to wear masks in public. They won't stop you getting it but might prevent you giving it. Guided by the science? Or guided by there aren't any masks?
Same day Germany announces plans to make face masks compulsary across the country. Austria has face masks must be worn in shops. People have been wearing masks for some weeks in Spain with each household being issued by the local town hall.
Who knows?
Anyway a true story. A well dressed couple recently left Scarborough Tesco and took off their masks and gloves and threw them away. The Gardener challenged them with "who is going to pick those up?" They picked them up and put them in the bin.

It just seems like common sense to me. Wearing a mask or scarf might stop you getting or spreading it. ::)

Looking forward to my next visit to the bank..😄

About 6 weeks ago I was out and about doing some 'survivalist prepping' and as I passed a B&Q I thought about nipping in for a stock of face masks, but decided that things wouldn't get that bad.... ::)

The lack of masks is more to do with the sudden global demand for medical grade sealed face filtration masks, not the 'stop you inhaling sawdust' types, which probably have next to zero virus protection. Likewise bandanas etc.
Unfortunately because the general populous like a good media driven hysteria, you probably can't even buy a pack of '20 for £5' disposable DIY masks anywhere. It's taken a month to resupply all the bog roll ::)
I don't know about anyone else, but I was raised not to cough, sneeze or breathe over other people...

I've been wearing a mask when visiting the oldies ,shopping etc since early march
such PPE was proved to help in 2003 SARS virus
17 years later ,major epidemic/pandemic and the UK government still don't support mask wearing for general public :o
clearly because they are unable to supply masks for key workers due to piss poor planning
OK a mask may not offer you much protection but does stop you spreading it
and not just when you cough and sneeze, you still spew water droplets when you talk and breathe
and it's not just about spreading droplets to other people directly,
stopping droplets on any surface etc will reduce transmission

Don't recall either SARS or MERS being an issue anywhere but on the news...
-
The simple answer is do whatever you feel right for you, there is no right or wrong answer at the moment it is personal choice, nothing easier than that.

Agreed :y
All I know is that if it comes to either a medic getting a short in supply mask or me, then the medic MUST always be the priority.
I have just run out of my box of 100 Draper Latex cloves and now I cannot get anymore. Halfords are out of them and online I can buy them ................but with due delivery of 29th MAY or 1st JUNE!!! :o :o :o :o
Let me have the disposable gloves please, before getting on to face masks! ::) ::) ::) ;)

because it has handled better ,information was PROMPTLY shared, the UK and other countries traced and quarantined and kept ahead of the problem.
unlike this time, information was late being shared (though we all knew about it by january ::) )
then they didn't plan, didn't quarantine people entering the UK, did a poor job of tracing
(I'm sure we all remember the footage of the coach drivers with no PPE who where going home to their families for a few weeks off :o)
then gave up, said to everyone keep calm and carry on going to work etc because we will all build up "herd immunity "
so a few weeks of the population spreading the virus everywhere ,then realize that due to their lack of planning and preparation, the health service wouldn't cope , and the population probably wouldn't be happy with 5% of their relatives dying from it
let alone 7% or more (13.5% tested die current inaccurate figures) 40000 estimated dead so far
maybe we (the UK) should admit we f**ked up and give out better advice ...
like wearing masks or face coverings ::) despite the shortage
get UK manufacturing our own ,instead of buying from China ,who started this worldwide monumental apocalyptic shit-storm :-X
and yes, I agree ,the NHS and key workers should get priority for proper masks :)
BUT, who doesn't have an old sheet or something to fold into a triangle ,to make a face covering from :-\

Yes. A full face bike helmet and 'sawn off' will complete the look.

There are some funny memes doing the rounds about face masks.
Here is quite a simple way of making a usable mask.

Perhaps she will let you use her bra as a mask. It may still be warm. :)
