You could get an electric bike Mick! :y

Widen the pavements WTF

I'm with Rangie ...... my commute isn't that different .... around 50 round trip. I don't want to think of trying to cycle home after doing a 12 hr shift. God knows what time I'd have to set off to get to work by 6:50am ??? ???

I was thinking much the same thing when he announcedthat the average commute outside Lundun is 3 miles...
It may well be at the moment because every fekker is currently 'working' from home and 'commuting' to the nearest Tesco Extra/B&Q to stock up on beer and sunscreen... ::)

Widen the pavements WTF
A few times cycling up and down Penrhys Hill and you'll be fit as a butchers dog Rae! ;D
-
You've all been listening to the shite that comes out of politicians' mouths, haven't you? Stop it.
-
From what I understood they are targeting specific journeys outside of London commutes that are less than 3 miles. This is a fair chunk of journeys.
It may not apply to you, but if it takes a proportion of the population in to account, along with getting people fitter (obesity a big factor in Covid deaths) and reduces pollution (which I am throwing in for the greenies), where’s the harm?
It’s not mandatory!

You saying I’m not then? ;D

I would only give it a go, once, if they offered me the whole £2 billion. If I did actually manage the 17 miles to work without dying, I would be in no fit state to work again.
-
I have a bike... I might get a grant to service it and a business development loan to set up a bicycle repair shop... ::)
£500k should do it :D

Anyone else noticed the pavements just are not wide enough to allow social distancing?
How long before the roads are narrowed (for example on housing estates) and the pavements widened. While they are at it cycle lanes could be installed.
Cycles could be developed with some form of assistance - electric is all the rage at the moment, green and all that. In fact you could call them motorcycles. To get the whole family to destination you could add a pod and call it a sidecar. For regions with bad weather the whole thing could be enclosed in metal and perspex and called an automobilecycle. It might be too big for the cycle lanes though and have to go on the empty roads.

It's not mandatory, but with public transport reduced to 10% load capacity it may as well be...
Also if anyone thinks that you're going to getting £7 airfares anytime soon, running a 189 seat aircraft with 19 pasengers means corporate jet charter fare levels.

You might as well go for the full million seeing as they've suddenly found a couple of billion to spray around encouraging people to don lycra and get on their bikes in our cold, wet and very hilly country. ::)

No.... It's just that some butchers dogs are fonder of sausage than others.... :P ;D

I see the Dorset knob eating contest has had to go online this year. I'll bet you're disappointed ;D

Widening pavements was mentioned. 👀

None of this is actually news of course, it was first put forward in late March...

I'm happy to go by bike. If all goes to plan I should be taking ownership of a Suzuki Hayabusa in the next month or so. :y

Boris said in March when they imposed the lockdown that it was OK to go out for a bike ride. So I went out and bought a bike....
A Suzuki DL650 V-Strom, and it's been great fun out on the empty twisty turny country roads round here! 8) :y ;D

Electric bikes are already out there and they are pretty good as well. :y
My neighbour bought a Cube E-Mountain bike and it's an impressive bit of kit. It has a Bosch electric motor in the crank which gives assistance and 5 speed derailleur gears, so he whizzes up our steep hill! 8) :y

It's just a distraction ,with public transport not viable ,unless your feeling suicidal :P
lots of people will be buying cars to get to work,to shopping etc etc
I see HS2 work continues ::)
Importing millions of pounds worth of crap, poorly made, unreliable ,electric bikes from China (thus boosting their ecconomy) is NOT the solution >:(
-
Good point, well made.

NHS will be busy load of old farts on two wheels..😄

The 'Busa' only has 200 BHP.....what's the worst that can happen. :)

You fall off and don't die :-\
Not that dying would exactly be a preference... But compared to losing a limb or spine...

Falling off hurts more as you get older.......so I'm told.
I'm not risk averse though so I don't tend to worry too much about what 'may happen' :y

But once all the roads are narrowed to shoehorn in bike lanes ,plus all the extra cars
(because all faith in public transport is lost due to risk of catching covid 19 and being dead)
Opti will need a fast, small mode of transport to service his extended harem :)

As teenager in the seventies I had a T-shirt that read 'If it feels good do it'....... I still tend to follow this mantra often with unforeseen consequences. :-X ::) ;)

Last time I fell off was when I was 40. Low speed lowside on black ice. I hurt from head to toe for about a week. 20 years earlier I wouldn't have felt a thing.

I still have the metal plate and allen screws ( in an NHS bag) from when I broke my femur in the late seventies.

I've got one from the 1980s , my Tibia ,broken into 7 pieces ,I mounted the plate and fixings on a teak plaque :)
