Title: 12 Volt Supply
Post by: amba on 09 May 2020, 18:32:34
Hope somebody can shed some light on why I cant get this to work ?
Grand-daughter has large paddling pool which takes for ever to inflate so had an idea.Found a 12 volt small blower which is used to inflate a gymnastic mat but only has a car cigarette socket to draw power from car fag lighter socket. All works fine and blower motor works from 12 volts on car.
When connected to a known 12 volt converter plugged into 240 volts blower will start then after running for several sections stops and starts almost spluttering to restart but wont .When switched back off and on again exact same thing again..motor runs for only a few seconds and back to spluttering again.
I have checked with multimeter and converter is showing 12 volts being supplied and for the past few years it has been used to inflate a christmas decoration so it has history of working.
Cant understand why blower works but only for few seconds....any pointers please

Think I might of answered my own question now but would still like confirmation if anybody can help.
Just checked 12 volt adaptor and it delivers maximum of 30 watts ...but blower runs at 40 watts 12 volt.
May that be the issue and we need a 12 volt supply capable of 40 watts ...which I assume a car battery delivers

I was thinking that the power supply can't keep up a constant 12V supply, whereas the car can.  :-\

If the blower runs at 40 watts .. then off 12v it is pulling 40/12 = 3.33 amps .. if the supply you are using is limited to 30 watts .. is is only capable of supplying 30/12 = 2.5 amps .....so it is no wonder the item is struggling ... in some respects you are lucky it is still working ... it "should" have blown any fuse protection it is supposed to have !!

Easy answer .. get a power supply capable of supplying 4 amps !!  (minimum) ...   :)

Most car cigarette lighters are limited to around 5 or 6 amps ... so that is why it will run from the car

.....

I've heard of some of these pools being largely inflated with a hair dryer, presumably set to cool  :-\

Thanks for advise guys.
New blower ordered from Helfrauds capable of 12 volts at 40 watts so should be fine.
