Title: Steering wheel
Post by: Webby the Bear on 23 May 2020, 16:20:59
Hi guys. Still managing to pile through the list of jobs on eeyore during this period.

My steering wheel when u give it a shake back and forth at 12 and 6 (like u would with a road wheel) it’s got a bit of clunking as if the steering wheel is slightly loose. I think it’s transmitting this through the wheel when making turns. It’s not bad just something I’d love to get rid of.

Any ideas as to why it would do that? I doubt it’s going to be the bolt loose that holds wheel on? But if it comes to it I will whip the airbag off and check. Tia 😃😃😃👍👍👍

For the love of all that is Holy...  ;D

There's at least two UJs in the column.

If it didn't have some give I would be more concerned  :y

Also, if the wheel were loose, it would have play whichever time you chose to shake it at ;)

it's adjustable too. Spanner check on all the fasteners, and a squirt of grease into the UJs is called for.

Thanks boys. What’s involved with getting to all the fasteners? Just the upper and lower cowling directly behind the wheel? I’ve checked tightness on lower uj and all good. Just the upper one it seems 😃👍

The upper one is accessible once the cluster is out and cowls removed iirc :y

I once had an Omega with similar annoying clunk. I could easily feel a kick by holding the bottom of the steering column. I was convinced there was a problem somewhere in the column. Turned out to be wear in the steering idler bush.

I've had similar from worn strut tube bushes, and a bent strut piston. Higher mileages and/or age increase the likelihood of such faults, and any Omega is now an old car.
Checking all the relatively easy to get at stuff is the place to start.
Worn idlers are obvious once you jack up the car, but I don't think they're the common fault often alluded to here. Or on any other steering linkage.

Cluster? As in the speedo/rev gauges? Bit of a ball ache 🤔 but yeah I’ll get on that as soon as possible.

I’ve been vinyl trimming my door cards where they’ve all scratched (I went for vinyl over the paint, sorry dg). It looks fantastic. It’s some rather odd stuff to use. But a big of practice with the heat gun and it looks sweet. 😃

I also cured my two year pas fluid leak. There’s a pipe that runs from the steering box along the osf chassis rail. Jubilee clip had decided it would rather be a dog. Or a potato. Rather than a jubilee clip. Air box out. New jubilee. Happy days.

I’ve painted my calipers too. Wish photobucket was still working so I could show you guys. Omegas had a lot of attention!

Cheers nick. I take it you mean strut / shock absorber? I suppose could be top mount related too. They’re due a change anyway and is on my 2020 job list 😃👍👍👍

DILLIGAF, I mean, it's not my car  ;D

I meant the cluster of grapes... Obviously the speedo :D

Between your escapades and Terry's '101 ways to overcomplicate things' lock down would be quite dull :y

I do.

Any shock with 100k miles on it is overdue for replacement.
