Title: Battery advice
Post by: razzo on 30 June 2020, 17:46:02
Now swmbo is working from home her car battery is not a happy bunny as she only uses the car once a week for shopping trip, grand total of under 2 miles. Was wondering best way to keep battery in as best condition as possible, ie disconnect neg lead, solar charger, or any other way to look after it, otherwise it will be my fault & i’ll Have to buy her a new one  :-[

I would say take it for a decent run, but you live the wrong side of the M25 for that :D

I would just use the car more, with at least one good hour long journey each week.

That's the best thing for all cars to keep them charged up and fully lubricated. ;)

I've got a solar panel mounted (I say mounted, its chucked on the dashboard) of my T4 camper.

It cost about £25 and keeps the Type 100 battery in great condition of charge over the winter months (when we get less sun).

Get one of the lidl or Aldi smart chargers and top it up every 2 weeks

The Audi has done 36 miles in 13 weeks .... that was one trip ! but the battery is in perfect condition as it is put on a charger on the 1st and 15th on the month for about 6 hours.

Not difficult to think about really, and comes under the heading "mechanical (or electrical) sympathy" ...

or in my case ... protecting my wallet!! (tight git that I am  :)   )

Talking of batteries I need to get a new one for the Project car, It's a battery that has been on a number of cars over the years and, even though I regularly take it off the car and put it on a full charge on the Ctek it's nearing the end of it's life.

Trying to decide what to get as I'm sure I read on here that the Vx batteries have dropped in quality recently.

that. Fit the hardwire kit if it comes with one(I know Ctek equivalents do), and all you'll need do is open the bonnet and plug/unplug the charger as necessary.

All of the manufacturers of toys(Ferrari, Porsche, Aston etc) supply these type of chargers, with their own branding, for cars that aren't used very much.

I second the advice for a ctek charger mxs 5.0. Not cheap at circa £70 but has a few advantages over cheap versions from aldi and Lidl (I’ve had both):

1) You can buy a quick-connect/release plug that is permanently attached to your car battery. Not only does this speed things up, it also allows you to close the bonnet and lock the doors of your car. The extra lead is called a ‘comfort connector’ and is only about £7 on Amazon. I also recommend the 2m extension lead for circa £12.

2) every aldi and lidl charger I have used have produced sparks when connecting them to the car battery. I’ve never had that from the ctek chargers I’ve used.

Top Tip: if you are very forgetful like me, and are concerned about driving off with the battery charger connected, get into the habit of leaving a note or the empty battery charger box on your drivers seat: this will remind you to remove the charger before setting off!

Sparjs from the battery merely suggests that the battery still has some current to give ???
