Title: Removing an auto gear knob
Post by: ChrisPee on 03 July 2020, 00:14:41
Hi chaps, as the title says - I'm ordering new leather waiters and wondered how easy it is to remove an auto knob? I fitted them easily on my manual, but that has a smaller knob (ooh er missus).

Either cut it off or dismantle half the car to remove the lever :y

Plenty of recent discussions for fitting the new one...

Leave it in place.

Remove the old gaiter by cutting the first 10mm (approx) of vertical stitching.

Your new gaiter will almost certainly have a much bigger neck, that will fit over the knob and need gathering to hold it in place. Mine came with a cable tie, which worked but was ugly. I slipped some lockwire into the sleeve instead, twisted the ends together, and tucked them in so nothing was visible which looked a lot better.

The handbrake gaiter was the same, but I kept the cable tie as it wasn't visible.

You'll probably need to do a bit of adjusting to get them to fit to the plastic mounts; a sharp blade, contact adhesive and some stretching - standard trimming techniques - takes care of that.
