Title: Time to say goodbye to the E Class
Post by: Jimbob on 17 July 2020, 11:14:17
Got the notification yesterday that as working from home has gone so well during lockdown that the company is closing my office and Ill be working from home permanently.

Mixed feelings on that, but will certainly enjoy the 2 hours extra a day I get from no commute, and I wont miss the fuel bill from a 70+ mile daily commute.

As a consequence, Ill not be doing a fraction of the mileage I have been doing so the Diesel will have to go before a load of short trips kill it.

Time to start thinking about what to replace it with.  Nothing particularly comes immediately to mind, but think ill investigate a Octavia VRS as I like tke look of em.
Fancy a reasonably sized, Petrol, Auto Estate thats not slow.

I been taking a peep at the 3.6 twin turbo Skoda Superb Elegance over the last year or so, but now the hybrid market is improving I think I am going to wait longer before I make a decision. :-\

The superb was a close second when I bought the E250, but the ones I liked were slightly too new / expensive at the time.

Sell the E Class to TB ;)

The 3.6 Superb sounds as rough as a badgers arse at idle and is only available with the DSG box.

And those are its good points...

And a Merc.  So my top offer is its real value of 50p, assuming it has a full tank of fuel.

If mileage is low, what about scratching that v8 itch, whilst there are still some about?

Not quite an estate but pretty big if you fold down the rear seats.

Young women love them......honest. :)

RWD is that or BMW or Jag, but you've pretty well ruled out the Jag for visibility reasons...

If they were 4x4 I would consider one, but not that of power  on a FWD

The other contender for me was the 508SW Pug but being a phat bugga the bucket seats s looked uncomfortable. :-\

If mileage is low, what about scratching that v8 itch, whilst there are still some about?

Youre the 2nd person to suggest it, and I see the reasoning.

But very few roads left round here I can actually drive it on properly, and even with low mileage not sure i can go back to that sort of economy.

I never speed maxed (165mph iirc) my old motorbike in the 10 years I had it. Never even tried. But I certainly used its acceleration regularly.

I guess if I can a modern v8, the situation would be the same - as you say, opportunities for top speed are very limited now, but I could (would, obviously!) use all its power to get it up to a sensible speed off every roundabout and corner :)

Had I known, shortly after getting the XJ that my mileage would drop dramatically from 20k to around 8k a year, I probably would have bought a v8. Ah, the benefits of hindsight ;D.  I'm still tempted to swap it for one, but now I have this threat of a 130m a day commute again.

The other option that goes through my head, if you mostly only need one car in the family, is for the second to be a little non descript, cheap to run/maintain, dull boring shitbox that does a gazillion miles to the gallon.  Though, somehow, I couldn't imagine you nipping to the shops in a Hyundai i10 ;D.  Its a silly option anyway, as if your miles are that low, and you can afford it, get something you want rather than hate. You only live once.

Yes.....so why buy something terminally dull that runs on canal boat fuel.

V8/10/12 petrol makes people smile. Derv is simply for the purpose of economy while you wait to die. Personally I'd rather smile and have less money. :y

I think that is the rear drive only 'Bambi on ice' version.......which makes it entertaining.

Yeah, weve got the small runabout sorted - Golf GTI (her car)

This needs to be the 'practical family car' The Golf is verging on too small as the runabout, so deffo looking at the larger cars, but holding back from the largest such as E class and suberb this time.  That said weve not been to sit in anything yet.  Weve very much liked the Merc and almost everything about it.  Im also considerabley smaller than I was when speccing the Merc, so every seat sat in etc then has no relavence now, what didnt fit before, may well do now.

Comodores are nice, but dont want to end up in a parts / maintenance struggle.

Actually pretty bullet proof as long as it's been serviced  :y

The early 6.3s are a bit of a liability unless the head bolts have been uprated.

If the 5.5 is a bit too much, then the C32 is worth a look... Supercharged 3.2 v6 with about 340bhp, so no slouch... Cheaper and rarer ;)

I could be tempted by an E63S from around 2017.

The 4 wheel drive jobbie with 612PS seems quite a sensible choice. Can always be remapped to around 750-800 BHP if it feels too slow.
