A few years ago I bought a Yamaha guitar and practice amp off a mate with a view to learn to play. orderded a 6 metre lead & when it arrived plugged it in to have a bash. Volume was all crackly and as I couldnt find any tools to fix it so put it all away till now. >:(
Thinking it was a dry soldered joint, or needing some swith cleaner spray I set out to strip it down. the lock nut on the input jack was lose and when the nut was unscrewed the whole thing snapped off, so guess this may have been the problem.
:-X
So, do I attemt to fit a new jack socket, buy one of the plug in headphone amps or just invest in a new mains 10/20watt amp. If so any recondations. :-\

Sell the guitar and amp and buy an acoustic. Im not a believer in learning to play on an electric. Its almost a different instrument, and acoustic should be mastered first, before moving on to electric.
