Title: Vauxhall Astra Key
Post by: gbh on 25 July 2020, 15:43:14
My elderly friend has just got himself an Astra and it only has the one key so I said you ought to get another asap,he just called me back to say Vauxhall had quoted him £160 for said key so any help or advice I can pass on to him as a cheaper alternative REG BG57VLD

That's about half what a Mercedes key costs :-X

£160 is not unreasonable at dealer prices TBH. Most dealers want £80 just to plug the gear in.

Smells like an Astra-H, so probably £40 for blank key, and probably around £40 for an indie to program.

Yep it's the twintop 2007 model £80 is a hell of a lot better than £160 that's for sure, would a locksmith be able to provide?

In that case, I would be more concerned about a working, leak free roof :D

Spot on with the roof as it doesn't work and hopefully doesn't leak!!!!!

As said, acquire the correct key from online sources and find a suitable indie to program.

No, to configure or write is the americanised program.  On the TV, you watch a programme.

Same as your computer has an americanised disk, but anything else round and spinny is a disc.

Most IT shite has standardised on the (incorrect) American spellings.

Be careful of places like this, as they tend to 'clone' the current key rather than adding an additional key properly. This often means that if the spare isn't used for a few months, it will no longer be in sync with the ECU, meaning unlocking with the key and then re-syncing (with the alarm going off). It's better than nothing, but far from great.

Without the Car Pass or knowing that the key etc is original to the car, a cloned key is your only sensibly priced option ;)

Which bit?

If the keys/transponder isn't original to the vehicle, you can't expect the dealers to reliably produce working keys.

Granted the Omega is relatively straightforward because all three parts of the key are individual, and someone with a Tech2, and knows how to use it, can readily reprogramme the chip/remote parts...

Key cloning isn't really viable if you ever want to use the extra key, as it wont unlock car.
