How the hell did this happen? >:(
-
Who killed him?
Information is sketchy.
-
Supposedly the guy was in handcuffs but still managed to get his gun ,somebody's going to get an arse kicking for not doing a body search ?
-
Apparently he was arrested for possession of ammunition and drugs. They clearly didn't consider that he might have a gun for the ammunition.... ???
-
Cuffed apparently ,but still managed to get to his handgun a good rubdown search should have found this or the electronic portal he should have gone through , killer known to Police as on terrorism list, apparently brought in by special constables if reports are accurate. May the Officer rest in peace.

The investigation will come up with the answers, but as I know them arrest and custody suite procedures have not been followed. The usual pat down at both arrest and in custody, and suspect supervision at the desk has fallen well short of the normal standards. For the 23 year old to not only be able to have time to pull out a concealed weapon and be able to fire off five shots into the officer and one into himself, whilst APPARENTLY being in handcuffs (which at that point is unusual) without being over powered is incredible, and hardly believable, but it SEEMS that is what happened.
RIP Matt Ratana the about to retire, well considered, sergeant. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
Hope the murdering assailant dies!! >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Effective street searches are quite difficult, especially at the moment when a lot of officers feel under pressure by crowds, a lot of the tome with the glass demon grasped in their hand and set to record. If the chap is cuffed to the back there's often a bit of "that'll do until we get him into the dock". Theres a lot of places that you can secrete items that you won't necessarily find them on a quick pat down.
Unfortunately a lot of officers younger in service (and who don't do a lot of hours, perhaps the case with these specials) will try to get things done quickly to minimise their time under this pressure.
Covid adds a complication, I've never been to Croydon but they may insist that "customers" hands are thoroughly washed before going in. Its quite difficult to wash someone's hands if theyre wrapped up their back, and again if someone isnt through there a lot, they may not seen the more inventive solutions. Especially if the detainee is being awkward or aggressive or plain doesn't want them washing.
Awful, tragic events. I can all but guarantee that the arresting and escorting officers will be piling a huge amount of guilt and regret onto themselves, and as much as this needs to be a learning point for everyone involved in the system... They are also going to need a lot of support in dealing with it. If the suspect survives hospital I sincerely hope he is punished as thoroughly as the law allows. We don't need to rough people up, as a country we are better than that.
RIP.

He was on the radar as a potential terrorist. But that applies to half of Croydon these days. :-X
What used to be a leafy middle class London suburb, is now like the wild west. :-X

It seems to me that the whole area within the M25 has become like the wild west! ::)

Lived in Croydon until 1987 , it may as well come under Brixton now.

Apart from Shoreditch, where everyone tries far too hard to be some kind of latter day hippy. Bunch of t wats. ;D

Well if his hands were cuffed behind his back (as said) how could he get to his gun??

It seems to me that the whole area within the biggest car park for London (the M25) has become like the wild west! ::)
Fixed that for you.
RIP to the officer who has lost his life, no one deserves to die whilst at work.

Well if his hands were cuffed behind his back (as said) how could he get to his gun??
If they bothered to search him properly before transporting him to the station, then that would have been a moot point :-X

See my post above. There is a limit to how much you can search on the street, which is why in custody they get a more thorough search. The officers involved will be under a huge amount of pressure themselves, AIUI they haven't been in for their first accounts yet. Please don't start speculating that they've messed up, without knowing the exact circumstances.
We've lost a good bloke by all accounts. The fault lies with the person that had the firearm, end of. Anything else may be contributory but I think the mainstream media are doing enough to harm morale...

Fair enough ;) No trying to finger point, but clearly something in the process was lacking or overlooked, and a lot of questions to be answered in order to learn from it...
