Hi all, I've recently moved to Germany and have just taken my 2002 2.6 CDX for a TuV (German MoT) so I can get it registered here. Only failed on the automatic headlight levelling... The tester got me & another fitter to sit in the boot to see if they worked but nothing was happening. Any ideas where I should start looking? How quickly should the lamps move downwards? Two hefty blokes sitting in the boot should be enough weight on the back, shouldn't it?

Start with the obvious...
Arm the arms attached and do the adjuster motors work...(these should self test when you first turn the lights on) ;)

I've just checked the sensors - took them off the suspension and moved the sensor arm independently = both headlights move up & down fine and you can certainly hear the motors working. Put the wheels back on and dropped it back down and put my weight in the boot/back bumper but there's no movement in the headlights...

Perhaps you're not compressing the suspension enough?
Another thought is that I don't think the headlight levelling is continuous, so you might need to keep it compressed for a longer time than you have been.

Surely if the headlamps do the self test on start up and there isn't a warning of failure then they are working ???
-
Indeed ???

Hmm... I get that I'm not compressing the suspension enough and I've never had a fault come up but what should the lamps be doing on start up? They just seem to brighten up but I've never noticed or heard any movement of the motors as if they're settling to position.

Park within six feet of a wall/fence/garage door and switch off ignition. When it gets darker outside, start it up and the headlights should flicker up, then down before settling in position. You'll see them do it against the wall.

Have you changed the lights for LHD?
Could be that the motor arms aren't correctly located on the back of the lenses...
-
Have you checked if the headlight adjusters aren't broken?

All sorted - went to another MoT place and explained the situation to them. They put the car on a ramp and the tester moved the sensors by hand and could see the headlights moving. Now got 2 years' of TUV on the car :y
