i have been driving since 1964 & this morning i got my first ever speeding ticket . clocked doing 36mph in a 30 zone. been lucky though as i admit i dont hang around. the guy that copped me sprung out from nowhere with a handheld gadget. the irony of it , is i was the fourth vehicle behind a tractor.

Should get offered a speed awareness course for that speed ,I did one last year think it was £90 no points though.

If you get offered the speed awareness course, which I'd imagine you would for that speed, it's a virtual course now due to covid so you don't even have to leave your house to take part. :y You do obviously need a computer or tablet with a webcam. :y

I do agree. :y The only reason I know this is because somebody who was worried about the virtual course asked me how to link up. If a course is accepted and you've paid for it, you get an email invite to a TeamViewer link (you do not need to download TeamViewer). Fifteen minutes prior to the course you have to use the link to show your documents, hence the webcam. This part is not seen by the other participants obviously. At the course start time you are linked in from the lobby and away you go. The webcam has to be active for the complete duration of the two and a half hour course (yes, it's shorter than the face to face group course). So, coffee on the table, laptop or tablet set up, piss bucket under the table, as the course guys have to see you being there at all times so you can't wander off mid meeting like I do at work. ;D
In fairness, the guy I'd assisted in the set-up tried to link up too early so they phoned his personal mobile to assist. They didn't have to do that, so they are at least sympathetic to people struggling. :y
You can use a laptop, tablet or smartphone, providing it has the camera and a mic that work. :y

Your speed can fluctuate in a block of traffic. Also if a larger vehicle suv/van etc was approaching from behind at a faster speed it's possible that it wasn't Ray that was speeding. Good luck proving it though...

Most of the people on my course were 'normal' middle aged drivers and one was a truck drivers. One young lad had one of those green skodas, which he razzed off leaving tyre marks after the course. He, of course, will not have got anything from it.

Last time I just paid up. I didn't fancy the idea of being humiliated and belittled about the dangers of speed by a 'woke' 22 year old fresh out of university.

When I did mine there was right smart arse who kept interrupting and was a complete PITA who clearly thought he knew it all and was wronged because he got caught speeding. ::)

Hmmm.....on my course (Saturday morning) we were told that it would take us till about 11:45, unless people started discussing the rights and wrongs of their particular case. The minute anyone started rambling they were glared at and talked over. Seemed to work. :)
One lad turned up five minutes late and was sent packing.
That was over three years ago, so I can win another one now. ;D

There was a wide mix of ages on the one I did. As the morning went on, it became obvious that 1/3 should have let their guide dogs do the driving, another 1/3 had barely memorised enough of the Highway code to pass their test years before, and the other 1/3 of us all knew better than to have done the stuff we'd been stopped for. A good score for the 40 road sign recognition was 50% :o
The people holding the course were all experienced police officers and a highway engineer, and it was held in the fire station. I found it interesting to hear some of the justifications for what we had done.

You get some real idiots on these courses , on mine (34 in a 30 zone ) some guy was telling the instructor that he could speed as his van had "Turbo brakes " ::)

By some miracle I have not yet been done (in the UK), so in yet to get the opportunity to attend. SWMBO has however, and I don't let her forget it, especially funny as she drives like miss daisy.

Guy I work with did that. He then picked up 6 further points in the space of about 4months. He then swapped his car for a 1.1 Kia (Rio?) And unsurprisingly, has yet to pick up any more points.

I'd just passed from a stretch of NSL road into a 30 zone and was still doing 48mph[according to the readout on the radar gun] officer directed me to pull off the main road onto a side road which as my late partner was keen to point out while the officer had his head partly into my car through the open window was called Pig Lane :-[ :-X :-X

Once stopped he read me the riot act. The blood drained from my face and my life flashed before my eyes etc.
I had recently lost my job of 20 years which was 5 minutes from home, and felt lucky to have found another job 17 miles from home;
So, as far as I was concerned I had just blown that and was going to be back on the scrapheap, possibly for evermore.
Once the copper calmed down a bit I told him this, but also that there was no one to blame but myself, so I had to take it on the chin.
I shall never forget what he said after that - "Look mate, I ride bikes myself and understand the temptations, but you cant go riding at that speed on public roads. This country is shit enough to live in these days, without having your livelyhood taken away from you. If you promise me you will learn a lesson and slow down, I will call it 95 and you get 3 points and £60. Are you happy with that ?"
I was so happy I nearly burst into tears. ::)
I kept my promise for as long as I could, then when I started to weaken, I sold the bike and havent had another one since.
I had a good run of about thirty years, and just about survived. It was time to grow up a bit and quit while I was ahead. :)

I'm still struggling with the last sentence. I have definitely calmed down* in the last 3 or 4 years, but seems everyone else on the roads has calmed down even further, which leads to frustration.
*I can't remember the last time I tried to max a vehicle, apart from the Battlebus which is always foot flat to the floor, unless PoS.

Similar here. Despite losing the need to go as fast as possible everywhere, I still seem to spend much of my time stuck behind people on single carriageways who are driving far slower than someone who holds a driving licence should need to be driving at.
You dont have to be an irresponsible maniac to be able to make a bit of progress safely. :(

Oh, yes since retiring and having no need to race around I now stick to the speeds correct for the road and the weather conditions.
No more traveling around at 100+ mph; no reason to do so even if there ever was outside "emergency" situations. :P :D ;)

In the South East the number of Traffic Officers have declined by 37% since 2010 and it shows in the far more prevalent instances we witness of Traffic Laws being broken well beyond "just" speeding . >:( >:(

The average speed of traffic in Glasgow city centre area was 22.6mph. That was before they introduced a 20mph limit around 2016.
Now 20mph zones are appearing across the rest of the city, together with a lot of cycle lanes - and I mean a lot.

I'm quite surprised, in these days of modern technology, that everything from the traffic car isn't recorded/relayed so the decision is taken out of the coppers' hands. Some folk might argue that whether you go to court or not depends upon who stops you and whether they've had a good day or not.
Then again, when you go in front of the beak, your sentence depends on who is sitting, so.... :-\

I got back from work last night, a letter in my name was waiting for me. I open the letter and my heart sank, 36mph in 30 zone. :( Then I realised it was the Wife's car. Semi-relief. Still as she said, she can't complain, it's her first speeding ticket.

SWMBO & I both attended the awareness course on the same day both got nicked by the same camera ! Could of made better use of the time & £180 so lessons learnt, hate paying fines or interest cash is better in our account.

When I returned from a period living abroad I didn't realise that they had converted the red light cameras on traffic lights to so called 'speed on green', and one day I got 2 tickets in the post from 2 consecutive days where I'd nipped through the lights before they changed. :-\
I got a speeding course for one and 3 points and £60 for the other. :(
