Title: How do I assemble the Dremel chuck?

I forget how to insert a tool in the Dremel chuck. the nut at the end of the chuck has a square hole in the end too small to get the tool holder through. What am I doing wrong?

Sounds like the clamp is stuck in the chuck.

Unscrew it fully and knock the 'square' out of the bottom of the chuck. If you currently have a bit stuck in the chuck then remove the chuck, invert it and tap it on a hard sufrac. This should be enough to release it  :y

Basically, if you overtighten it, the clamp get stuck in the chuck.

Dremels use a collet chuck.


Remove the nut, and you'll see the collet pushed into the spindle. It has an external taper that matches the inside of the nut, and some slots which close onto the tool as the nut is tightened.


The nut doesn't need to be tightened by much to grip the tool tightly. Which is unfortunate, because many of them are done up so tight that the collet is forced further into the spindle than was intended and is damaged. That's why the spanner supplied with the Dremel is so small!


Pull the collet out with some pliers, and inspect it. Each slot should look the same, straight, and the through hole be circular. Replace any damaged collets as they're consumables, and cheap.


Be aware that there are different collets with different size holes, which need to be matched to the tool you're using. I have at least four different size collets for the various dremel-like grinders I have.

This thing, 10mm nut internally threaded, square hole in the hexagon end.

That's normally used for a flexible driveshaft.
