Yes, looks like you just got your ADSL connection from it.

I tried RDP, but it was abysmally bad - something like 2M down, 1M up.

I will have to do from office tomorrow, if I go in.

Then, to be really clever, I though about doing it from one of the News servers - 1Gb of unfettled connection, straight on the Colossus backbone, but probably a bit naughty ::)

You HAVE to test it out  ;D

I need to find a way of making my server ALWAYS connected to the internet. If anyone knows how, let me know! (windows 2003 server btw, with a usb ADSL modem). Any ideas??

The plan was to disconect the LAN as my sister will prob be using her pc on the internet! (or at least she was!  ;D)

God knows why, but its disconnected from the web too?

Just notice my avatar has now gone too! DUHH! :'(

RRAS on Windows Server will do the always connect to internet, though to be perfectly honest, get a router.

RRAS is fairly easy to set up, you'll have to set up as NAT though, as it can't deal with addressless routed IP, as is used if you have a block of RIPE IPs

Variations are expected, both adsl and cable users.  Cable can be particularly affected by other cable customer's habits. DSL tends to slow up a bit during peak times.

Its quite misleading actually...apart from a couple of sites Betfair and Ebay it loads the content plenty quick enough,no lag or delay.

My home broadband is ofcourse quicker but not THAT much more noticable. :-?

High Speed Downlink Packet Access.

Its a method for packet distribution over 3G networks using HARQ and can support upto 42M using the newer plus version.

It can also be rolled out onto most existing 3G base staions without hardware upgrades and will be what finally does for the ill conceived wimax!

Generally not much in it, but ISDN is point to point straight to ISP, DSL can go round the houses to get to ISP, so you can be unlucky depending on the combination of where you live and what ISP you pick.

You will only notice latency on interactive comms like VoIP (which is shite anyway as its a low priority service).

No real affect on downloads etc.

I use VoIP a fair bit at home, giving it a fairly high QoS priority. My ISP does not traffic shape.  Works well for me :y

lol, the limit in reality at the moment is the link from the base station to the network which is often only a few 2M streams!

The technology is quite simple, because they know there will be errors in the sent packets, they actually transmit each packet a minimum of three times but encoded using 3 different formats. At the far end (or your phone depending which direction the data is traveling in) the packet is decoded and then compared to the others in order to error correct.

Having tested a few data cards the performance of HSDPA devices varies greatly IME, and the advertised data rates assume a perfect RF signal path. Levels perfect, no multipath, etc. In other words, if you want a solid 7.2 Mb/s, ask Vodafone if you can run a bit of coax to the local node-b.  ;D

As I came in the office today, thought I'd run one from my desk...

Still not brave enough to run one from one of our unfettled internet feeds  :-/
just looking at this, seeing as ethernet performance plummets at 40% (or did in old days), thats pretty much max I'll get when connected to 100Mb switch?  Or is the fact its switched now going to improve how well it performs under heavy utilisation?

Again, its dependent on what is set up on the network with respect to links and ques!

A switch in threory should give you full output bandwidth if nobody else is using any of the other leaf ports.

As I typed it, I seemed to remember I was going back to the hub days....

The office was fairly quiet at the time, I know we have 100Mbit link out to main corporate network, and about 15 hops to get to internet!
