Title: Limp mode - manual transmission Omega
Post by: Tick Tock on 21 December 2020, 18:35:26
Having an aversion for automatics (always been a dark art as far as I'm concerned) I much prefer manual transmission, because at the end of the day it's basic mechanical engineering. With the inclination and enthusiasm, any problems (clutch / bearings etc) can be done in the comfort of one's driveway / workshop, whereas most auto problems require an exchange unit. Anyway, forget the background waffle.......

I came across this on Gumtree -

Forgive my ignorance, but how would a manual transmission car go into limp mode?

Yes if the engine ECU detects an issue that it can support in a 'safe mode' - eg. knock sensor failure.

Ultimately you will only know what is wrong with that car by reading the codes.

Limp can happen on the engine management, in addition to any limp on the automatic transmission ECU (although on most cars, the engine management and auto transmission is the same unit anyway, though not on the Omega).

So sensor issues, or mechanical issues that cause the ECU to not be able to run at peak, thus it instigates limp.

Well you learn something new everyday.

So basically what you're saying is that limp isn't confined to automatics, moreso engine problems.

Definitely not confined to autos.

£650 is way to much. I'd be looking £300, as a starting price.

That's been floating around for quite a while, may be worth a cheeky offer
