Just heard from the middle of the desert that England has raised the school leaving age from 16 to 17!! Is this for the rest to catch up? Is this to keep pupils off the streets or what? It seems the English form of education is going down the slippery slope. Give it a few years and it will be 20 years old for leaving school FFS. Grump not quite over! >:( >:( >:(

Just another government meddling knee-jerk. Presumably there was a column in a tabloid yesterday saying it was a good idea. ::)
I wonder how many teachers were consulted?

I think they should bring back National Service for anyone leaving at 16... Doesn't have to be military, could be community but would change a few things IMHO

Heard similar on the wireless today, they were considering 18yrs. What's the point in keeping a delinquent 16 yr old on for another two years if they do'n't want to study? They'll only hold the others back & waste teachers time & effort & taxpayers money. If they wo'nt work put 'em on community service til they get a job, lock 'em up for 6 months if they don't attend. No good putting wasters like that in the services, they've got better people to train up.

From what i heard on the radio this morning is although the leaving age is now 17 it doesnt mean you have too stay at school.
Still leave at 16 but you must be going into training/college or paid work....so really we should be happy that there not going too be either straight on the dole or hanging around down the local shops acting like nobs. :y

All for it myself. Some off the school leavers ive seen look like where tort by pikeys. May as well not have bothered. How can you turn people out into the job market in that state?

It so
big brother Central Government can say 'oh look we've reduced the unemployment figures.... there is no unemployment in the 16-17 year old bracket.....' ::)

All for it, it isn't just staying at school as it can be a year on an apprenticeship or at college

What are they going to teach them for the extra year then, Manners, Respect, Birth control, common sense, morals, i doubt it very much unfornately, maybe they will learn "our" new languages, Polish, udu, or some other such language we hear everyday on the streets GRRRR you may have noticed i have become a little cynical in my old age >:(

Shortly to become two years I believe -- so then they can boast no unemployed under 18's !!
TBH though, given the choice betwenn them doing something constructive for a couple of years or spending my money in the form of dole (Job Seekers Allowance ??? Hah --- Job Avoiders Reward!!), I would rather have them gainfully occupied !
