Title: Ikea ARRRRGGHHH!
Post by: Broomies Mate on 02 January 2021, 20:46:55
For a fair few weeks I've been trying to order a BESTÅ cabinet from Ikea.  Out Of Stock.

Now, this is a modular thing, so I've broken the individual components down, and entered them individually.  Go to Check Out, and despite each and every component being In Stock, I get the Out Of Stock error.

At least I know which part is causing the problem, a small drawer-front which is showing as 'low-stock'.

This is a standard size drawer-front, which many of their cabinets use, so I'm pretty confident it'll either be there when I go to collect the rest of the stuff, or at the very least, will be in-stock at some-point in the near future.

Whatdyareckon?  ::)

Any interesting stories of Ikea?

Can't comment, I'm banned.

The stuff is shite anyway, significantly worse than what MFI used to sell.  So I'm not upset over this ban.

I went once 20 years ago and still break out in a cold sweat at the thought of it.
Swmbo had won a £1000 voucher and the Daughter was also with us to buy furniture for her first flat. we were there when they opened and were last ones out of the car park.
I ended up with four of those big long trolley things full of flatpacks to manoeuvre around the shop, and then load it all onto the back of a Transit pickup truck, drive 45 miles home, and unload it all at the other end.
I would rather chew my own feet off than spend another minute walking around Ikea. >:(

No you can't get lost Ronny as they have a set path which you have to follow all round the store.

You go in the entrance and get herded along with all the clucky women with their pissed off/bored blokes until eventually you get spat out the other end at the exit.  ::)

It's designed for women who like to gaze at everything for sale, but crap for blokes who know what they need, and want just go in, get it and leave quickly!  :)

Last time I went I loaded up the car then nipped in to have a pee before heading home. Yep, there's no way to get to the loo without going round the whole rather maze again. >:(

MK is a piece of piss to get around, but you do have to look at the road names (well, numbers), as if you don't know the place, all the roundabouts look the same.  But the H and V numbers make it a piece of piss :y

Obviously right up to the point where the grid goes through the original towns of Wolverton, Stony Stratford and Bletchley (where Ikea is), where the rid goes to pot ;D

In 1990, whilst living not far from the M5/M42 junction, South West Of Brum, we decided to buy an Ikea kitchen.
This was before the internet. Ikea being North about 40 mins drive on a Saturday. We worked out carefully every part we needed, and went around and filled up the car. And roof rack, but they didn't have the knobs we wanted. Oh well. We decide to fit the rest and go back.
Half way through fitting the work top I noticed an issue so had to go back and swap it. Whilst I was there I tried to get the knobs. Not in stock. Couldn't reserve them.either. And they couldn't say when they'd be in stock.
I passed the Junction on work trips occassionally, so over the next 3 weeks I popped in twice. Still no knobs.
Finally we went on a Saturday Morning with a screw driver, and in front of the only salesman, in the kitchen show area , we removed the knobs we wanted, and got him.to put them.in a bag, with a hand written price tag.
It wasn't the out of stock bit that screwed my mind, but the fact there was no way of reserving them.

Has it got any better with the internet?

About 4 years ago I was forced to go and buy a double bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers and 2 bedside drawer units from Warrington.  It just fitted in the omega. Took all oppsing day. Had to go to a separate warehouse to queue up for half the stuff.

The quality and ease of assembly are acceptable to me. I just hate the place and customer experience.

I think, like Ryanair, the customer experience is deliberately poor to remind you how cheap stuff is. Not a strategy that works, for me at any rate.

Not sure it is that cheap (for the quality)

All bought, collected, built and it's job jobbed.

Correct, the store is closed.  They do Click & Collect, and it was a great little system they had set-up;

Drive into the Click & Collect Waiting Area,
Phone a number on posters dotted around,
Enter your Order No,
Get SMS which tells you which collection bay to drive into,
Man with trolley brings stuff to your car,
Load said stuff into car,
Man comes and takes trolley away,
Drive home and start installation.

I'm really surprised that so many of you think Ikea stuff is shite..... I mean, it's certainly not solid hardwood, but it costs peanuts.  The best part about it, it's so bloody easy to build.  All the drawer runners and cupboard hinges are soft-close or push to open (you choose), I've never had an issue with missing fixings, it looks (almost) like a premium product.

I really rate Ikea for their standalone furniture.  I've never had anything like a Kitchen from them, but when the time comes to replace mine, I'd certainly consider it.

a word of warning ....
Ikea units are weird sizes for doors and drawers

buy from a big DIY store like B&Q etc  when a sale is on and you get standard carcases 300 , 400, 500, 600 wide
doors and drawers sold separately in many cases ,but standard sizes to fit the carcases  :)
couple of years down the line you can just replace the doors if you fancy a new look  or replace the one door the dog ate  ;D

Got to admire a businesss that sells  stuff  that the customer assembles. Brilliant strategy. But I too hate the place, the only good thing is seeing people trying to load 2000 kg of billy into their 205 saloon on the way back to your getaway car.

We extended an IKEA kitchen and couldn’t source  the handles except from US.. i hate it when companies make recent parts obsolete.
