we were driving home tonight and spotted an Evo that had been modded to within an inch of its life >:(
This left me thinking what would make a really good sleeper, i.e. something that looks completely bog standard from the outside to the untrained eye but under the bonnet yields some real power.
Omegatoy once had a 2.0GLS that had lotus carlton running gear, now that's a proper sleeper......
if you could do a sleeper what would it be

MV6 is a good start, especially with the Vx grille. Part of the attraction for me.
I think they used to be called Q cars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleeper_(car)).
Volvo and Saab usually have one tucked away in the range somewhere.

Cortina Savage, pref Mk1 but looking stock, may be with 5 1/2 J steels with chrome hub caps.
Often fancied doing something with an early Mini, now today that would upset the chav's :y

In my mind these were motorway patrol cars without the stripe or blue light on the roof, commonplace now but not 20 odd years ago. :)

I remember seeing a Moggie minor with a Fiat Twin Cam and have always had something of a hankering I must admit.

These days they do them the the Hayabusa conversion.

My sleeper was my yank, big and brown, box shaped a bit like the old Zepher.
Ate 911 Turbo's for breakfast (if the rear wheels managed to get traction) and coz it was on Pirelli P6 60 Profiles it went round bends like it was on rails.

I later that night found the car and as you do went and asked what the hell he had in it. Now first of all the car was not so much a car but a pig of the plastic kind with just the one wheel at the front and the bit that made this go so well was in the back and that was a very well tuned rover V8. It looked completely standard apart from two large exhaust pipes and two wide wheels on the back. Don't want to race him again :-[

I had a friend with a 'steath pig' very big engine, load of weight in the boot iirc, and painted dulux matt black by hand! suprised many many people.
He also had a v6 milkfloat, complete with fake painted milk bottles at one point ;D

I had a savage many years back, really quick in it's day, loved it to bits wished I had kept it now, but things move on as they say.

I used to have a fairly modded mini about 15 years ago. It was about 12 years old at the time and started out as a fairly bog standard 1 litre. By the time I had finished it had disc brakes up front, a 1275 metro engine bored out to 1340cc with a race cam (sounded like a tractor at tickover but higher revs were amazing) Uprated suspension with a touch of negative camber and some fat little 10 inch wheels on there.
Nothing used to beat the gaping astonishment on the face of the boy racers in their chaved up Novas and Cavaliers when they were left for dead at the lights. ;D Happy days

My old 3.2 plod estate ran about with a 2.0 badge on it's rump.
This made for much head scratching amongst the spotty hot hatch kids.

I have seen a factory built Talbot Avenger Estate 2.2 16V - only 2 built and this was the survivor and it was quick.
Only sign was Lotus Sunbeam wheels and rear discs

i had an old ford Corsair, originally a 2.0 V4, but retrofitted with an essex 3.0v6, taken out to 3.2, and with high lift cams , gas flowed, ported blah blah,...
looked like a bag o shite
went like greased weasel shite.
until you showed it a corner.... when it hoppitty skipity jumped around them all over the shop...
tried all sorts of tyres, (firestones seemed least skippy) and assorted shocks (spax did me some reasonable ones)
still rubbish ...... on the road......
but on Gravel it was awesome.......

that certainly was the most fun in a car i ever had!! the look on peoples faces, when they thought i will just pass this old banger!! priceless :y

i love building sleepers, so far i have built
Mk2 cav CDi, totally stock looking with the exception of 15'' cav expression wheels and a slightly bigger bore tailpipe.
It started life as a 2.0 auto, the first conversion was a 2.0XE with lots of tuning goodies and throttle bodies (about 185bhp) used to decimate most normally asparated 2.0's
the last one we built was a Mk2 cav Cabrio, this started as a 1.8 and ended up with a 2.5V6 in it with the G spec cams, lightened flywheel and lots of other little tricks, that was pushing 202bhp, the only concession with this one was resprayed cadburys purple and had 15's on it,
the most fun we had was a friend who managed to get hold of a early 1.6 sierra 3 door, totally original and with about 40k miles on it, in the back of his lock up he had a smashed up a RS500, you can guess the outcome..... ;D a biege 1.6 looking 3 door with RS500 running gear, he was still running steels with the wheel trims

My Sunbeam was built as a 1.0 but very soon gained a 1.6 and I didn't debadge it immediately.
FOr a couple of months 1.0 badging crappy wheels and a 1.6 lump

Sorry Mike to argue, but there were a number of these on the M4 and M5 during the 1980's, operating out of the Almondsbury Traffic unit just outside Bristol. ;)
If I remember correctly they were some Carlton's, Volvo's, and another which now I cannot remember but used to watch out for them all the time!! ;D ;D ;D ;)
There where also some 'floating' around Hampshire, with even a Triumph Spitfire being used (by a female Traffic cop) at the time!! :o ;D ;)

Thats the best advice I've heard in a long time.
The Idea of a sleeper is really really appealing to me these days, I'd be tempted to try it out on my next car actually.
I know a guy over here with a 1.6glx sierra with cosworth running gear, crazy thing.
I also never trust mini's, seen a few with 1.6 litre vtec conversions :D
And just to keep it a bit opel....

I remember seeing a fiat punto and though 'whats the point'. It looked 100% standard. Anyhow, It got to the start line, and if you asked everyone, they would put money on the modded nova next to it.
Lights go to green, and to my surprise, the punto launched into life! It was turboed! ::)
That would be a killer at traffic lights! ;D

Twas ad ebadged Uno Turbo, slippy little think and very very surprising through it's speed range from zero. :-/ :y
