Just when we thought it was getting better, bloody scientists find another bat-flu .. ffs

Poor bat! You'd think they'd have covered his modesty.

He'll be thinking "Everyone can see me dick, except me, cause I'm blind as a bat".

OK, and the IMPORTANT LINK (https://glorioussouprecipes.com/soup-recipes/bat-wing-soup.html) ;)

I saw in the news today that there is now a Brizzle variant of Covid that the vaccines might not be able to deal with. ::)
Perpetual lockdown anyone? :-X Sigh.... :-\

I could barely walk after spending a drunken weekend with a Brizzle girl :-[
Does this mean I`m immune :-\ :) ;D

Yes please :)

Every county in the UK will have their own variant soon the way things are going, it appears more of a shambles every day a new
"expert" appears each morning on the TV and just adds to the confusion ,and then the holiday ads appear followed by the government advice "Stay home stay safe" you really couldn't make it up.

Selling the idea of hope to counter the message of fear.
We need the message of fear ::)
half the country still haven't got the message about social distancing etc and think Chinese Virus won't effect them >:(
sooner or later it will . if everyone took it seriously ,we'd be in a much better place.
The press are already AGAIN talking about when the lockdown will end ,what people can get away with, pubs opening, holidays FFS >:(
1000+ dead per day and 28 thousand in hospital with Covid 19 , new strains and mutations ,and the more people ignore it,the bigger problem it will be .
there's a lot of thick people in this world and FEAR is a basic instinct that even thickos have ,not all though .
-
Unfortunately the UK has an abundance of thick bastards who possess nil intelligence.
-
It would be ok if it was just them who got infected, but it doesnt work like that unfortunately.

.
You're absolutely right , we've got quite used to the lockdown routine not exactly the retirement we had envisaged but a lot better than the other common option at present, personally I think it will continue a fair while yet if others want to take their chances with pubs aeroplanes & any other stupidity good luck with it.
-
We have the second highest death rate, after Belgium, per million population. And that's inspite of being locked down.
That's proof enough that the current lockdown arrangements simply don't work.
And although the numbers look impressive, they're still a fraction of the population. Total cases 6% of total population, active cases 3% of total population, of which are critical 0.17%, and fatalities from total case number 2.85%.
So, as it stands, this has killed less than 3% of the near 4,000,000 people who have contracted it.
Not being able to work or socially interact with the regulars at one pub seems like an extremely draconian price to pay for those odds.

No it is not! ::) ::)
Have you forgotten that the first lock-down, which was more complete than the current one, was lifted - thousands went to the beach, to the countryside with queues of traffic, then for Christmas the brakes came off again with mass family gatherings? Do you remember that then, surprise, surprise the infection and death rate rocketed again?
No lock-down = higher infection and death rates. Simples (well for most of us!!) ::) ::) ;)

Did any of the lockdowns actually prevent the virus from mutating and subsequently spreading?
-
Although the virus will always mutate[it's what all viruses do] the lockdown
didn't stop it spreading because they weren't strict enough. Why are people up in arms at the idea of up to 10yrs in prison for lying on quarantine locator forms? If you don't lie you don't go to prison simple as that.
-
Did any of the lockdowns actually prevent the virus from mutating and subsequently spreading?
or you could put the horse at the front of the cart ::)
the more people who catch covid, the more chance it will mutate ;)
because of easing of lockdown after the first and second wave ,it spread rapidly ,as a result of that ,mutations happened :(
had the original strain been kept under control and numbers of cases reduced ,by lockdowns, track and trace, border control, people following the rules >:( , we wouldn't be getting so many mutations .
the "new hope" is vaccination ,which is a long way off bringing the virus to a manageable level for any sort of normality .IF it works enough to cope with people spreading covid by ignoring restrictions
-
The key word there is 'had'
It was never going to be because they waited until March to close the border. :-X
The argument for continued cyclic lockdowns is only about not over stretching the NHS and not preventing the virus from mutating.

They closed the border? :o
As far as I'm aware we've been the only country in the world that has had no Covid controls at our borders what so ever. Not even a basic temp check! ::) >:(
Oh! Hold on..... The border was closed for a few days at Christmas..... By Emmanuel Macron! ;D

The argument for continued cyclic lockdowns is only about not over stretching the NHS and not preventing the virus from mutating.
::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) plus ::)
Lockdowns slow down the spread
less spread means less people being hospitalised (so less NHS overstretching )
BUT ALSO .. the less new cases, the less chance of mutation
every NEW case is a possible mutation !
repeated national lockdowns will end once the virus is manageable ,
however , local lockdowns will still be needed in hotspots ,
one person testing positive and self isolating is a LOCKDOWN for that person ,albeit a small one ;D
vaccines for the over 50s leave all the under 50s un-vaccinated ,with likelihood of increased cases and by nature ,mutation .
so we need a combined vaccination, robust test, track and trace system (including isolation and targeted local lockdowns),covid testing at borders with isolation until proved not to have covid, and EVERYONE to get on board with HANDS, FACE ,SPACE
which ,after a year of ballsing it all up, the Government are now trying to implement
The only way the UK will get back to any sort of normality that everyone craves is to get on board and stop the spread and stop banging on about holidays, pubs, parties, visiting people, "it's not fair" ,"I want"
or we can carry on as we have, until we have a mutation or new virus that will just wipe us all out .
then you can go on holiday, to the pub, have a party do whatever you like ,in the next life :P

Some people will still argue with this but I agree with you 100 percent Dave ,it's harsh but true but a lot cannot deal with what's happening , and will continue to bury their heads in the sand.

Looks like the Kent Variant could become the World dominate one according to leading expects :o :o :o.
So, to the rest of you not living in Kent, stop nicking OUR virus, stick to your own! ;D ;D ;D ;)
-
So it’s gone viral then :D
-
Yep, Kent is taking over the World! :o :o
Always believed my County had something to give, other than pollution, lorry parks and a welcome entrance for illegal immigrants! ::) ::) ;D ;D ;)

Long but interesting read:
https://www.wired.co.uk/article/chronic-infection-uk-coronavirus-variant
The takeways are that the B.1.1.7 (Kent) variant probably emerged from a patient with a weakened immune system, allowing the virus to 'learn'. And that the more ANY Covid type spreads, the more likely it is to find a really dangerous variant.

Indeed, very giving worse luck. :-\

I'm far from convinced this is true. It's not just the number of people infected that increases the chance of mutation. It's also the period over which the infections persists in the population. Lockdowns can never be 100% effective, and so do extend the period over which the virus is a problem. Try this thought experiment.
Suppose the Govt marched all of the 68 million UK population into a hangar, and deliberately sprayed them all with active CV19 virus. Within 4 weeks we'd all be either full of antibodies, or dead (probably around 2 Million dead). Either way there wouldn't be any active cases left in the UK, and the hospitals would be empty of CV19 patients. Within a 4 week period there wouldn't be enough time for a virus mutation to get hold, so CV19 would die out here.
The other extreme is to lock everyone down, and keep them locked away until everyone has been vaccinated. The problem with that approach is that it's going to take the best part of a year to vaccinate everyone, and as we are seeing that's plenty enough time for the remaining viruses to mutate and possibly become vaccine immune.
IMV It's simple Darwin vs Human Nature. Darwin says the virus will evolve such that some strains becomes resistant to the vaccine, and those mutations may be more or less harmful to their hosts. Those hosts (humans) that are better suited to fight off the virus will survive and prosper - Those that aren't won't.
Human Nature will be (is) to adopt a whack-a-mole approach trying to (and failing to) kill off any new mutations as and when they become a problem. There are very few instances of Humans actually managing to eliminate a Virus - we just learn to live with them. Spanish flu died out in less than 2 years having killed around 50 Million world wide.
In the UK we tolerate 20K flu deaths a year. We are currently at about 125K CV19 deaths and we're locked down.

Yes, your points sum it up well, but of course are disturbing. That why I believe no one should be so arrogant to think the vaccines will restrict COVID completely and things could get worse before getting better, and that is why I for one will not be foolish enough to predict the future. It is in the hands of GOD ;)

Unfortunately ,now track and trace is becoming effective ,the penny pinching knobs in charge decide to cut back on tracers :(
so instead of working, helping reduce the spread, the tracers will go on benefits :(
you couldn't make it up :'(
as for the Kent strain , don't count your chickens just yet ,we're only just a year in :(
I'm sure that Covid 19 has so much more to give take yet :P

Isn't it racist towards the people of Kent and Kentish people to call it the Kent Variant? ??? :)

The God of love - who has sat back and allowed over a million (so far) of his creations to die a horrible death from it ? ???

people shouldn't leave it in the hands of God to sort this mess out .

We're all in this for the long haul , something we have to accept I think I've had it good up to now but really feel for the youngsters who without a doubt are losing out on so much with no "normality", what the new normal will be remains to be seen.
-
I will say I told you so when, this time next year, we're still locked down. ;)
apparently people learn from history .
so check your own and MY previous posts ,March 2020 on
your view all along has been it's just flu, lockdowns don't work , lets all just get on with life .
115 thousand deaths later and you still don't seem to grasp the serious nature of Covid 19
herd immunity doesn't work ,we learned that pretty early on ;)
my posts tend to suggest we air on caution ,we don't know enough about covid 19 etc
by March 2020 I was wearing a mask when out ,had the raw ingredients for 450 liters of disinfectant/hand sanitiser, stock of supplies like food and bog roll ,you could say "hoarder" yes , but it was weeks before anyone thought to stockpile food, bog roll or hand sanitizer etc . I prefer to call it forward planning ,an idea you preach DG :P
so, If we are still locked down in a years time ,feel free to quote me :)
we will be locked down because of selfish people not following the rules and making poor choices ::)

I would like to know the percentage of people who are taking this pandemic seriously, round here the problems seem to be with the supermarkets people not adhering to social distancing , always posts in the local paper about this, doesn't affect us as we opted very early for home deliveries ( saves a fortune as it happens) got used to it now miss certain things obviously but what else can we do if we wish to remain safe from the virus?
-
By nature I am a Libertarian. I believe in the smaller the State, the better. Government should interfere in peoples day to day lives, and take as little of their hard earned money as possible.
However, to me the current situation is similar to being in a major war, but without soldiers. Its the unfortunate but necessary situation where the Government has to be involved in a major way and take the grave responsibility of limiting peoples freedom for the good of all.
Something which should always be a rare, once in a generation event, and not something which should ever become normalised.
Im happy to go along with it, because there are good reasons behind it, but once things return to something like normal, we need to make sure they dont hang on to our freedoms, as Politicians almost always want to do, by their nature.
They are not to be trusted most of the time, regardless of party or claimed beliefs.
-
....not interfere...
-
Here is a thought.
Death and infection statistics are high now due to how the stats are produced. Will we see them magically go down when there is a good % vaccinated.
-
....not interfere...
Thankyou. :y :-[ ;D
-
I would like to know the percentage of people who are taking this pandemic seriously,
Clearly not enough :(
back in the early days it was about 80% compliance ,which is unlikely to have improved :(
hard to quantify anyway as many idiots seem oblivious to even simple rules ,or believe in autonomy ,it won't effect them etc
what else can we do if we wish to remain safe from the virus?
"Hands , Face, space" and disinfect everything (post, shopping, deliveries etc)
Here is a thought.

Lets hope so ,all conspiracy theory's aside :P
-
Home delivery for shopping is all well and good if you can actually get a slot.
Best we can manage around here is about three weeks ahead. Which is great, but what do you suggest for the meantime?
Bread only lasts three to four days, likewise fruit/veg... Getting £20-40 shopping every week delivered makes it stupidly expensive compared to getting it yourself less than a mile away.
I go shopping twice a week. Usually in the village, but if neither of the supermarkets in the village have a particular item, then that means a twenty mile round trip to the nearest bigger shops, which are that busy, there's usually a queue to get in.
Dog gets a walk a day, and if I am really well behaved, I get to go to work once every 7-8 weeks. (technically we're classed as essential workers, and if any of the companies customers wanted us to travel to an outstation we could legally travel internationally without quarantine).
Apart from the odd weekend away and holidays and working full time, life is pretty much unchanged.
Where I call BS on the lockdowns is not being able to do things like getting a haircut, when I can do almost everything else that I normally would.

Given that we are testing more people than most countries around the world, it shouldn't be a surprise that our infection rates are higher than many. ;)
One thing that I'd like to know, is how are different countries are determining a Covid death? ??? ::) Because this business of being counted as a Covid death if you died for any reason within 28 days of a positive test (which may be a false positive anyway!) has always seemed completely ridiculous to me. I read for example a few months ago that Germany only counts people who have literally been killed by Covid as a Covid death. Which seems sensible? ??? ::)
Capt Tom for example was admitted to hospital with breathing problems due to pneumonia, apparently contracted Covid in hospital and then everyone is saying he died of Covid? ??? ::) :-\ :-X
-
To Varches' last... Which will only serve to reduce our immunity to germs in the long run ::)
To Sir Tig... Noone has dared to suggest that it would be miraculous for some that far north of 80 to NOT contract pneumonia ::)
And it goes without saying that having recently spent 16 hours at around 8,000 feet or so (the effective altitude inside a commercial jet at cruising altitude) won't have helped any.

Where I call BS on the lockdowns is not being able to do things like getting a haircut, when I can do almost everything else that I normally would.
Because whoever is doing your perm and blue rinse can only do so by getting VERY close to each customer .
any one of which could have Covid ,so potentially spreading it to 10+ :-\ customers per day ,who take the covid home to granny and the wife & kids ,each spread and new case is a potential death or new variant
I doubt many people die from having long hair though :-\
and being locked down, no one will see your long hair :D
or buy some clippers and a pair of scissors and watch a few youtube videos on how to make your hair less long :P

I bought some clippers last March and now can do a fairly decent Grade 2 short back n sides. :y
Not sure I'll ever go back to a barber to be honest as it's always been a chore I've hated. ::)

Haircut is simple number one attachment & straight over for me once a fortnight looks excellent, used to be a zero when I was working but I don't need to look like "a hard bastard" anymore.

all good points :)
unfortunately the 28 day thing is an international standard :(
which is why you look at excess deaths, 125 thousand
this will include cancer patients etc who die because hospitals are rammed with covid patients
they have died because of covid ,rather than of covid
so we need to get on top of covid ,by social distancing ,following the rules etc

Not having it. He caught covid and then he died. He may have died from pneumonia, but he definitely died whilst suffering from covid.
But what killed him pneumonia or covid? Given that at his age pneumonia would probably have got him anyway, covid or not? ???
-
Here is a thought.
Death and infection statistics are high now due to how the stats are produced. Will we see them magically go down when there is a good % vaccinated.
??? ::) :-\ :-X

I don't know for sure, but he died while he had covid, so you could hardly exclude it as a cause. None of this matters, of course, because as much as we pass comment on our various forums and social media, the government decides who does what and when, and our thoughts don't really count.

It was perfectly reasonable for someone to cut my, and other people's hair wearing a face screen (like they do at the Hospitals).
If that's a reasonable thing for hospital staff, why isn't it good for everyone else where the situation may warrant it ???
-
I bought some clippers last March and now can do a fairly decent Grade 2 short back n sides. :y
Not sure I'll ever go back to a barber to be honest as it's always been a chore I've hated. ::)
I got clippers a while back, before Covid :y
I fitted out my Uncles barber's shop for him and could have free haircuts ,but it takes longer than run the shears over when my cap gets too tight :P
My dog most definitely needs a haircut. ;D
pet clippers are also available for home delivery from Argos .Amazon etc etc
though being cold ,I doubt your lovely little dog would appreciate having it's coat cut off right now ;)
-
England rugby coach Eddie Jones earlier on the news: The people who spend all day trolling on social media are the ones who used to write on the wall of public toilets. ;D
That's not aimed at anyone on here, just thought it was a great way to look at it.

Hospital workers are doing important jobs ,saving lives
they run the risk of catching and spreading Covid ,possibly ending up dead .
your hair being a bit long is not so important to the UK's economy

My £20 alone might not matter, but add it to the 50-60 that might go through each barbers and hairdressers 6 days a week it actually adds upto a reasonable amount :-X
Add in all the other furloughed people... Being paid by the government whilst not actually producing anything. It simply doesn't make sense to close down whole swaithes of the economy when reasonable precautions can be taken to allow them to continue.

you forgot to factor in the cost of treatment for those people with tidy hair who catch covid and live , or the funerals and other costs ,for those that die
As for "reasonable precautions" ,one thing we have learned is that there are plenty of idiots about ignoring advice about staying safe etc ,
the only "reasonable precaution" would be to stay home with long hair or cut it yourself
people looking for loopholes, ignoring the lockdown and not social distancing because they think they know better IS the reason covid is doing so well
I do hope your "long hair" problem is resolved soon DG
must be a really hard issue to have to cope with :P

Long but interesting read:
https://www.wired.co.uk/article/chronic-infection-uk-coronavirus-variant
The takeways are that the B.1.1.7 (Kent) variant probably emerged from a patient with a weakened immune system, allowing the virus to 'learn'. And that the more ANY Covid type spreads, the more likely it is to find a really dangerous variant.
Good read! :y
Yes, your points sum it up well, but of course are disturbing. That why I believe no one should be so arrogant to think the vaccines will restrict COVID completely and things could get worse before getting better, and that is why I for one will not be foolish enough to predict the future. It is in the hands of GOD ;)
The God of love - who has sat back and allowed over a million (so far) of his creations to die a horrible death from it ? ???
When we are born we are given no guarantee on life expectancy and how we will die along with the challenges we will face in our lives. No one lives forever in this existence, and therefore millions die every year far beyond that who have died from COVID. Most will fade away peacefully and pass onto the new life ;)

Ah, but if your number is not up that bus will never get to hit you. One common comment from old soldiers, like my father and father in law let alone others I have heard talking about it, is if the bullet or Bomb has not got your name on it you will survive. Many warriors have found that out during their war experiences when they have been just ‘the few’ out of 1,000+ that were killed in one action. ;)

How can someone wearing a mask, having their hair cut by someone else wearing a face mask and gloves catch anything?
Or are all the doctors and nurses catching and spreading it??
It might seem like a trivial thing, but there's alot more to it from a self esteem aspect.

America's CDC has decreed that if you've recently been vaccinated you no longer have to self isolate if you come into contact with an infected person and remain asymptomatic. This is progress folks! :y

20% of covid infections in hospitals is people going to hospitals for non covid related appointments
so yes, doctors, nurses , are spreading it ,even with PPE ,and risking their own lives and others.
BUT doing essential work
"Gloves don't work" you touch things (like peoples hair ) and spread germs anyway ::)
have you considered counselling about the ongoing trauma of your barnet :-\

I would talk it over with my fairer half, but apparently it is illegal to actually meet people...

I would talk it over with my fairer half, but apparently it is illegal to actually meet people...
you can use phones, and even the internet to communicate with people who are not in shouting distance.
you could even buy a web cam or video call on your phone ;)
women like to talk DG , so it would earn you a few brownie points ,
plus you'd get to know each other in more detail :)

Yes. He's done every BLM video on YouTube now, and is fully up to speed with the concept. Gender identity is more complex, and his understanding of that particular subject needs work.

...... Gender identity is more complex, and his understanding of that particular subject needs work.
well I can't get my head round it , and can't be bothered to try , so good luck to him :D
know doubt he'll explain it all too us all after research ::)

He'll get there, he is very understanding of the principles, I know that at least.

It's looking like the US will hit half a million deaths this week. I know that their deaths per million is no higher than other countries, but that a lot of dead people.

we're thrashing them on deaths per million though :(

I've aid it before, and I'll say it again..... the truth will come out sooner or later.
Very few people seem to have died of Influenza.
Very few people seem to have died from Pneumonia.
Very few people seem to have died from ANOther illness.
COVID COVID COVID.

COVID COVID COVID.
Assuming that is true, what explains the Excess deaths figures?
If 20K people haven't died from Flu over the last year, but 125K people more than expected have died, then there are actually 145K unexplained deaths to account for.
-
How can you include the 20,000 that haven’t died?

How can you include the 20,000 that haven’t died?
They have died, just not of flu. You expect an average of (say) 500K people to die every year, 20K of which die from flu. However, for some reason no-one actually dies of flu yet 125K more than expected do die (625K in total).
So those 20K, plus another 125K did die of something, just not flu. So what did they all die of?
-
Flu deaths down significantly because of social distancing and mask wearing. Covid out of control because of idiots not social distancing or wearing masks. :D

Bored shitless with the incessant media coverage that assails our screens each and every day? :D

Meanwhile over in New Zealand a person coughed and they closed Auckland. :D

Likewise Victoria >:(

The question, how many people who died, tested positive for covid before they died, or were admitted to hospital with another complaint, and covid was listed as cause of death... Or is it easier to put covid on the death certificate.
Seasonal flu deaths are down,as are other deaths..,..
Calling rods2 conspiracy theory to find.

No need.
We're all going to die!!!!!! By feeling slightly shitty for a month, that will be so tedious we'll lose the will to live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Make your peace with Allah now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And even worse than that, I've broken the exclamation mark key :o

125 thousand excess deaths ,so ,if they died of covid, died of covid after day 28 , died because the hospitals where full and they couldn't get treatment for cancer or other illness ,got a covid test and got run over .it makes no difference ::)
at the end of the day , directly or indirectly 125 thousand are dread that would probably be still alive if covid didn't happen ,
if people followed the rules more then maybe a few more would be alive
until we get on top of covid , which will involve further lockdowns ,possibly local , and hands ,face ,space and vaccine role out and people following the rules >:( many more will die
sooner or later people who don't follow the rules and don't social distance etc will loose someone close to them or someone they love .
I know people who have had covid , some still ill weeks after , I have a relative who can't get cancer treatment right now because the hospitals are full of covid patients .
2 days ago a friend of mine died , real covid , struggling for breath ,organs failing etc :'(
people need to take it seriously
