Apparently both front tyres are 'Donald ducked'
I quote.
Tyre has a cut in excess of the requirements. Both tyres.
Best price I can find is £345 ( after negotiation) for 2 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S 255/35/20 97Y.
Ah well. :)
-
£345 is not bad for those tyres. Even my astra derv needs at least £100-£120 a corner for anything half decent.
-

The original quote, which is presumably MRRP was slightly over £500. I wonder how many people simply pay up without trying to negotiate a better price?
Th tyres on the back are bigger 285/30/20 so will cost more.
-
Have you actually looked to see if the tyres are damaged ?

A mere trifle for the owner of half of Lincolnshire. :P

Less common size, so price does go up a little

For five quid more Lord Opti could have new tyres all round. :y
Fronts 255/35/20 (https://www.asdatyres.co.uk/255-35-20?speed=y&load_index=all&range=budget)
Rears 285/30/20 (https://www.asdatyres.co.uk/285-30-20?speed=y&load_index=all&range=budget)
Good enough for his weekly trundle to Waitrose? :P

I like the sound of the HIFLY ones ;D

Plastic tyres shouldn't ever be used. 500bhp on those, I can predict the outcome.

Chipped to 550, iirc.

LOL, just looked at link, cant even manage a A for wet grip. I'd refuse to even get in the car.

You'd need a new set of tyres every day with that under your right foot.

510 BHP as stock . About 570 BHP following the the remap. I did consider a pair of economy 'ditchfinders' but I came out in a cold sweat. :)

Ignoring failures and punctures, I'll have you know I've never done a road tyre in under 3k. So ner.

Even with the wheels turned it is hard to see the inside.
The front boots are crappy Dunlop Sportmax so I'll be glad to see them go.

My (local indie) garage takes pictures of any failures that can be seen with the naked eye.

an excellent idea ,It's becoming more common to do this with many "trades"

£153 on camskill and £30 off if you buy 2. So £276 plus p&p. Same tyre.
-
£152 on my tyres for P zeros.
-
I will need a pair of 265/35/18 at some point. I darent look for prices yet. :o ;D

There you go then we've just saved Lord Opti £45! :y
Well... Rae did! :)

£6-800 should buy four decent tyres for pretty much anything. :-\
-
I would normally want a car attached to them for that kind of money.
That might have to change now though. ::)

My last four cars have cost more for the tyres than the cars did.

I'd actually just been looking through Camskill ..... Michelin though but they're more like £250 a piece. Not sure I can justify a grand on tyres though ???

Avon or Uniroyal woukd be about as low down their list as i might go... :-\ But both come out at or below £600...

It certainly gives you pause for thought about buying a big vehicle. ::)

Need 4 for the RRS soon reckon £600-£800 on 20 inch wheels, always had Yokohama an all my 4x4s always done the job well.
-

I even pay for Beanz!!!!! :o :o ;)
It is rather strange not paying for consumables or servicing on cars, or doing the work.
That will change shortly as the apprentice will be 17 soon and will need a cheap runabout

I asked if the tester did this. The answer was no.
I shall insist on viewing the old tyres when they come off.
-
The full description of the failure is as follows.
Tyre(s) has a cut in excess of the requirements deep enough to reach the ply or cords. :o :o :o
So they sound well f*ucked. :D
Sounds more like a defect found on a FWD hot hatch.

The place is all about profit these days ... share holders & all that. Our 'Christmas bonus' last year was 4 tins of tomato soup & a kiddies smallest selection pack!!
A month or two back we'd made an extra 55 000 tonnes of product .... we were rewarded with a free meal in our canteen :-X :-X

indeed & it's the biggest canning factory in Europe .... all 50 acres of it
-
Maybe it doesn't help that, in Asda, the price difference between Heinz and branston has narrowed significantly recently. Supermarkets are involved in a price war with the Germans, and having the massive buying power that they do, can cut suppliers to the bone.

He says on the tata MOT thread ;D

No MOT tester now available until Friday week. Looks like I'll have to wait another 8 days to get a certificate and new tyres.

Absolutely.
I've just used a mirror and had a feel around the inside of the tyre. They seem fine. It will be interesting to see what the problem was.

Tyres fail an MOT test but are ok to travel (up and down the country, as far as they know) at motorway speeds. You couldn't make it up.

One of many reasons why inspections should be done by a disinterested third party

My, Lex Leased Van went for MOT in January. Kwik-Fit (as demanded by Lex).
2 front tyres, new front disks and pads.... and wait for it.... two new brake light bulbs as they weren't emitting enough lumens! ;D
Tyres easily had 2.5mm, Discs were changed last service (Vx), so maybe 28k miles ago. I'll give them the pads (although I didn't see what was removed) and as for the 3yr old original brake-light bulbs???????? ;D ;D ;D

I think I'd whip the wheels off and have a proper look. ::) :)

No need to take them off ,you can inspect front tyres on full lock
that's how the NT (MOT tester) would have come to the conclusion Opti has far too much money the tyres are damaged

They managed 4k, so far more durable than the Conti SC5s I tried.

Beware that buying tyres mail order for you to arrange local fitting can cause significant expense if you get a warranty claim.
So IMHO, to use mail order, it has to be *significantly* cheaper, which they never are, so I tend to go for the supply and fit outlets. Worth phoning round the local places and negotiating ;)

On full lock with a mirror you can see and feel all of it.
He didn't say it was dangerous.........just fit a new pair of tyres.
As a callow impoverished youth all my cars made do with remoulds. Don't think they are legal now.

Tyres will be purchased from MOT centre after price-matching elsewhere.
£172 fitted is as good as I could get.

Same size tyre as on the front of mine. Back in November I paid £168 each for my 255/35/20 97Y Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S, price matched by my local tyre place, but when I just checked they don't even list them now. :-\ That seems a fair price you've been quoted by comparison. :y

Yes.....I'm happy enough with the price. It saves me having to make two trips. One trip to get the tyres, and another for the retest.
