Title: Auto gearbox won't shift up to 4th
Post by: EliteRich on 17 February 2021, 18:54:42
My car is a 2003 Omega Elite Estate 3.2L V6 24V. No jokes but around Christmas time all the lights on the gear selector started to flash from top to bottom but would settle on the selected gear. More recently, all the lights show at the same time but even in drive (D) the display only shows 3 now. I've accelerated over 70MPH with 6500RPM and it just won't shift up to 4th. It is not in limp mode. Any input would be great.

A separate gremlin is the passenger rear window. I can get it to go down from the drivers door control but not back up. I have to turn the key in the lock to run the mode that closes all doors, windows and sunroof.

Your gearbox issue is probably the selector switch bolted to the side of the gearbox. Usually removing it, cleaning the internals and refitting/adjusting fixes the problem. About 30minutes work.

My 2.6 occassionally does this, but no flashing lights it just sticks in 3rd, then you've got to give it the beans up to about 5.5k and then let of the throttle quick and it will shift.

does the window operate correctly from the rear door switch ?
if so its more than likely the front main switch thats at fault.mine occasionally does the same thing but a few sharp pulls usually sees it working again.

Do what Nick W proposed, after cleaning check that those metal leads are not broken, see link below.

You know that's not normal, right :-\

...drove with original ATF about 280 000 km, I remember that when engine and gearbox were cold and I went directly to highway I had some delayed shifting from 2 to 3 or 3 to 4. After having changed oil about a year ago I did not have this behavior any longer. Perhaps nothing to do with the old oil but that happened to me.

As we all know on here the 2.6 shift points are a bit high anyway compared to the 2.5 but should still shift without being forced

Years back when I did the cam belt on my 3.0  I failed to connect a sensor from on top somewhere (cam sensor ???) and the car would only start off in 3rd .... I could manually select 1 & 2 but the car wouldn't drive in auto or go into 4th. I drove to Ellesmere Port to see Dr Omega (remember him  ;)) & he immediately spotted my deliberate mistake.

I learned today why there is a cam sensor, never understood, as V6 does not run if crank sensor fails. In my Vectra (Simtec 5.6.5) engine was running by using cam sensor although crank sensor was broken.

The ECU compares the crank and cam positions for the sequential injection and accurate spark timing. Helps starting and low rpm drivability/economy/emissions.

Then I learned two things, but still I wonder why V6 does not run (in limb mode) by cam sensor.

I did feel stupid when Phil spotted the plug as soon as I'd lifted the bonnet  :-[

Two banks, four cams and one sensor :D

Four pot only has one bank to worry about. Cars with VVT will have a sensor for each cam :y
