Title: roof box
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 04 September 2008, 15:26:22
Just looking online and roof box prices are outrageous!

I really need a large (500-700) litre one, any ideas where one could be obtained at reasonable cost? ::)

Just a thought  ;) it would also mean not having to store it when not in use  :y
But you are right they are not cheap to buy plus you still need to buy the roof bars to fit your roof rails too  :y

I passed my test after April 2001, which means I must take an extra one to tow.

Plus, I am an entusiastic driver, I don't want a trailer jumping around behind me on it's little wheels ;D

I got a 360 ltr one off Ebay last autumn for £35, and only had to travel 50 miles to get it   :)  Just have to wait and watch .. they come up occassionally, just don't be in a rush ... I waited around 3 months to get that one.. :) I already had the roof bars for the bikes .. :)

You've misunderstood the rules. I don't pretend to know it all - I passed  my test before you were itch in your Dad's groin! ;) - but as I understand it you only need the extra test if the total car + trailer/caravan has a gross weight (or what ever they call it these days  :-/) is over 3 & half tonne. If you're towing a small trailer you're obviously no where near that, you'd even be OK with the majority of the caravans on the road.

Does that mean then, that as a newly qualified driver you're allowed to tow a 1750kg trailer/caravan with a 1750kg car? ie 100%

Seems this is catching out a few younger caravaners.

Oh! As, obviously it doesn't affect me I've never really taken much notice, but I'd always thought that as long as the total didn't exceed 3 & 1/2 tonne you were within the new rules, but as again ...... I'm wrong.
Just another level of beuraucracy that costs us all. I can't see that compared to the millions of miles travelled by Joe Public that trailer accidents counts very high in them.
