Title: Vulcan Project
Post by: tunnie on 04 September 2008, 19:47:55
I know some of the members here follow it closely, was there a planned flight today? At 7:30 PM on my way home, just where the A43 meets Jc 10 of the M40 i saw if fly past me!

What a sight, it was super low, shame i just pulled onto the A43, if i had seen it earlier would have stopped at the petrol station.

Such a magnificent sight  :y

Me too !!!  Must have been great to see it in flight -- pity you didn't have the camera to hand.

Nah .. back home in bed by now after the Sunset parade .. all tucked up nice and warm :)

AKAIK most of those shows are flypasts only, no static displays. Leuchars is about the only one with sufficient runway for her to land on.

In that case Entwood I hope she flies South towards my part of the world some time; Manston, which I understand has one of the longest runways in the UK, is close enough for me to get to and watch this beauty. :D :D :D :y

A little outdated i know but i've seen the only remaining airborn Lancaster flying over Coningsby when i lived in Tattershall. What got me was the bass note & the way it flew so low & slowly & still stayed up, it appearred to be 20ft up & hardly moving. I now understand why there are aircraft viewing areas near RAF bases around Lincolnshire.

Does Manston have an airshow ?? I have a vague thought I've dropped the Falcons there many years back. If there is no airshow its unlikely she'll land there.

Off Topic : Manston was always close to our hearts in those days ... A Master Diversion airfield, and the only one in UK that could put down a full-foam runway... shame that its gone .. :(

They definitely don't make them like they used to -- technology has it's place -- but no soul

Nah, she can land at most places, shes already landed at:

Cottesmore
Bruntingthorpe
Farnborough
Waddington

To name but a few.

On first flight it only needed about a quarter of the brunty runway to get off the ground and not much more to land and thats without the brake shute!

Beleave it or not, they did land one on an aircraft carrier once!

She may well land and stay over night at Witton!

She can land at most military airfields and many civilian ones ... but from the published list of displays for September - which is what we were refering to !! - I don't see many active airfields !!!! ( somehow the grass strip at Goodwood doesn't seem right to me !!  :) :) :) )

The vulcan was supposed to have flown at the 'Bouremouth Air Show' last weekend, but sadly didn't make it, due to technical problems (undercarriage repairs done Friday, but no inspectors avaliable to certify work before Monday !! :() so missed out.

Did see the Lanc/spit/hurricane of the BoB flight tho' got some cracking piccies!!! :y  along with old Gnatty, and the Red arrows.  :y

Yes, an issue on the under carridge cover, it didn;t open so teh leg just pushed its way through it apparantly!

A common fault I am told!

They don't hold the airshow at the airfield anymore but the aircraft are based there for the weekend.

The display is held along the coastline at Palm Bay just east of Margate.

I was at a campsite about 500m from the airfield this year......great view of the arrivals and departures:y

It must be common as it didn't attend Dunsfold for the same reason :(

Excellent........enjoy :y
Bit to far for me I'm afraid but very tempting.
15 years ago I probably used to attend around 15-20 airshows a year, lucky if I get to one a year these days :(

I managed to see it suddenly appear in the Sky two days running on it's route to the Lowestoft Airshow, a wonderful sight I will never forget.

Yes it does, or at least an 'open event' when various aircraft are lined up, and demonstrations are performed alongside the 'Battle of Britain' Museum there.

Last time a Spitfire and a Mustang, both operational Kent based aircraft visited, along with a DC3 Dakota, that was used by make believe 'American' 101st Division Parachutists to compile a film. :y

Whether or not a full air show involving flying aircraft such as the Vulcan ever takes place I am in truth not absolutely sure :-/.  But in the south east we of course have major air shows at Biggin Hill, Woodchurch (occasionally) and Eastbourne, so I may have to wait for those events!  Both Fairford and Duxford is a long way off for me nowadays I'm afraid. :'( :'(

At least I am lucky enough to be old enough to remember seeing multiple Vulcans, along with Victor's and Valiants, taking off, landing and generally flying during my childhood as my father was in the Royal Navy and so gave me the opportunity of seeing RAF operations from time to time. :y  Bloody marvelous! :-* :-* :-*
