cant decide which 1 to get. always wanted a ps3. mainly for picture quality when watching movies and the graphics whilst playing games are just imense. ps3 is much more than just a games console
on the other hand the wii is supposed to amazing for the games and have heard every body going on about it.
just wondered what you folks think.
-
Wii is a lot more fun than a PS3 :y
-
Ignoring for a second that buying a PS3 calls in to question your sexuality...
PS3/Xbox360 if you like the unsociable games where you sit for hours and hours being a miserable bastard. Good graphics/sounds, though imho, always lacking something in the gameplay
Wii if you like more sociable type games, the sort you can pick up with a few mates after a beer, play for half an hour, take the piss out of everyone, and put it away again. The capabilities from a graphics point of view are limited, sort of last generation type consoles, but somehow, Nintendo have managed to create a 'fun' element with it. I would play on a mates Wii to confirm you like that style though.
-
I have had my Xbox360 around 2yrs, and the Wii around 3 months, and I know which has had the most use.
-
Lastly, I'll add, if I was a 14yr boy who didn't like girls, I'd go for the Xbox/PS, as I'd be sat up in more room all night ;D
-
We have a PS3 and a Wii the PS3 gets more use.
The boys love Lego Indiana Jones, I like strategy type games
-
I just summized with Mrs TheBoy if we should get a PS3. Once I explained what it was, she said:
1) Don't be gay
2) We ain't having any more Sony crap in the house
I think she thought I was serious for a minute, you'd of thought she'd know me better ;D
-
i have a xbox 360 and a Wii.... they can't be compared.
The 360 kicks ass on the graphics front, but no good for partys. The Wii is for fat people who want to get fit, or for lots of druken parties.
PS3/xbox are for geeks who like their games, like GTA4 or COD4 8-)
-
The PS3 is without question over hyped...i was lucky enough too get one as part of a mobile phone deal.
So mine didnt actually cost me anything.....sold it a few weeks later as couldn t really see a huge difference between ps2 and ps3 games wise (this is on a standard tv.!)
That and the fact it was hardly used...just shoved in a cupboard at work so sold it ;D
I think anyone who plays a games console is most certainly Gay....real men online play poker ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
If you have got young kids you can't go wrong with a Wii, my little ones love it, although they get slightly over excited so moving the furniture is usually a good move ;D

far from it, we use our wii for a multitude of different things...
Me and my stepson are really competitive, we frequently challenge each other to a game or two.
My daughter uses is a lot and it has aided co-ordination
My wife suffers with ME and has found that the yoga has been really helpful in dealing with her illness.
Me i like it because i have to get off my a$$ and actually move instead of vegging out of the couch in order to play the other consoles....
that's the biggest plus point of the wii, you can play it and not feel guilty about it like i do after playing xbox360
-
Of the games we have I like Motorstorm, Drakes Fortune and Assassins Creed.
I might get Prolgue if I find it cheap enough or wait for the full version. Still play GT4 on hte PS2 though

I'd invite you to the next one Tunnie, but I'm not sure you'd cope too well ;D

I lent my XBOX360 to Mrs TB's brother in March, and got it back 2 or 3 weeks later.... ....its still in the bag he brought it back in....

To be honest, I was asking the same question.
I quickly discovered though you can't really do a straight up comparison between ps3/wii.
All the effort on the wii has been put into the movement functions. The actual games & software are secondary to this. Hence all the games I've seen so far on a wii have been dodgy looking "cartoon" graphics.
Even their flagship "wii sports" hasn't got enough space to have figures running about the screen with legs, they just hover around the screen.
As has been said already, the wii is a social console. But if you played it by yourself, it would bore you within the hour. The software is aimed purely at this level so you will never get the breathtaking graphics you get on a ps3.
The Ps3 on the other hand ( yes jamie i'm a sony gaydo :P) can be both. you have the motion sense controllers & you have the network play/ 2 player setups. But you also have the "bloody hell" graphics of the software & the sheer versatility of the console. When you buy a ps3 game, the first time you play it, it updates to the most recent software version to repair known glitches etc.
Plus a little known fact is that a dual layer dvd has about 7-8 GB on it. A Ps3 blueray disc has about 60GB on it.
Go sony m8, you know ya wanna ;)
PS
Ask any ps3 owner about the joy of Call of duty 4 online. Its playing soldiers for grown ups - well big kids anyway :y

They are aimed at different markets. Actually, the PS3 is an oddity, as its not entirely aimed at gamers in a sense - it has another motive, related to Sony's survival.
Sony wasn't looking too healthy (still isn't), and had pretty much bet the company on Bluray, which wasn't going too well against HD-DVD. In order to win the battle, Sony used the PS3, which they knew would sell due to PS1/2 sales (and Sony customers are stupidly loyal), to get as many BR players out there that they could control (as Sony, in typical fashion, kept changing the specs, many early BR players will no longer play newer titles). Sort of similar to Microsoft's alledged underhand tactics, only people don't hate Sony as much.
This is why PS3 was also rushed and released when not ready, and also why sold at a loss. Not to mention why they didn't have the ability to get the PS2 emulator working properly, before quietly changing the specs in true Sony style when they can't get something to work dropping it.
The problems with the PS3 and the need to get it out early are the reason why the PS4 is rumoured to be out in 2010.
As to the disk capacity for games, it will be similar to when games first came out on CD, and then DVD - the extra space won't be used for the game, but will be used for intros and videos - which is very nice if you buy games to watch such things. I'm sure the space will get used at some point, but not quickly, for 2 reasons - portability between other platforms (Xbox and PC still predominently DVD), and the fact that coders are still struggling to get to grips with the PS3.
As to online game updates, virtually all games across the main platforms do that anyway. Good on Sony being able to do this at last ;D
-
I have both the PS3 and the wii and i use them about the same so if i was you buy both :y :y
-
ps3 it is then. will use it mainly for watching movies on anyway. little lad loves fast cars and wal e etc etc.
-
a dvd player is cheaper ;)

After getting back from holiday we still haven't plugged the Wii back in.
PS3 has been used for games, a film and some streaming from the PC.
Oh Wii controllers eat batteries, and make annoying noises, PS3s recharge off the PS3 via USB.
Best Wii games are Super Mario Galaxy and Mario Carts.
-
Whats the best deal on the Wii, which is the best package to for.
Me thinks it's time to consider one.

If you want the wii fit as well, gamestation always seem to have them IF you buy a wii as well.
DONT buy an extra controller - buy wii play - £5 more than a controller and includes one.

Will go and have a look round, not priced them up for ages.

not come down much, as in true Nintendo style, short supply keeps demand high...

Can't get 40GB drives any more now

PS3 is also a very capable blu-ray player, so you are not just buying a games console.
Remote PSP thingy is actually quite good aswell, if like me you have a PSP of course!!
I would say if you do get one do what i did and get a UK 60gb as it has the backwards compatability and the memory card slots and the extra USB ports, the 80gb and the soon to be released 120gb do not have these, which in my opinion takes the 'shine' off it.
With rock band/ guitar hero thing coming to PS3 soon (with full drum kit, mics and guitars) it is becoming a post pub pissed up party console kind of like the Wii
Woolworths are doing the Wii for £159 which now makes it a very cheap option.
As they say 'you pays your money and takes your choice'

having played both of these badass consoles, I couldn't really give any preference to one nor the other, except to say the following:
If you like to have friends over, have beers etc and dont mind not having cutting-edge graphics to play on, the Wii is your best bet.
On the other hand, if you like serious gaming, state-of-the-art graphics and physics, and online gaming (in other words you, like me, are a geek), spend a grand on a PC. If you haven't got that much money, get a PS3, but make sure you get the 80GB version as the hardware is better, and it has legacy support (means you can play ps1/ps2 games on it!)

Erm no it doesn't
Only the 60GB has backwards compatability, it has been removed from the 40GB and 80GB along with the card readers and the extra 2 USBs to justify the reduced price compared to the launch price of the 60GB

I have a perfectly good media center, that can do Blueray. Cheaper than a PS3 as well :-X
MCE (or VMC) also does one of the best upscaling from std DVD to 1080p I've ever seen. Only film I own on both std DVD and BR is Casino Royale, and you'd be hard pressed to tell them apart. Yes, the BR does have more detail, but from 10ft away in your armchair, you wouldn't know. Thats how good MCE/VMC is at the upscale

Didnt know that... thats totally illogical though - the price of an 80gb hard drive is what? £30?? Sony really do rip people off. If it wasnt for the fact that the PS3 is basically the cheapest blu-ray player on the market, there'd be uproar.

True but isnt the PS3 BR reader firmware updateable to the next version whereas very few dedicated BR players are.
I had XP MCE running on my last system and it kept crashing, losing the channel data, etc so generally not impressed although the conceptual idea was brilliant. Now I have Sky+ I got rid and now have Vista on it and turned it into a gen dogsbody machine (stopped it crashing.....)

I've had every console known to man since the dawn of time and hand on heart I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the 360 is by far the least reliable machine i've ever owned, but it is a powerhouse with great games and it does get a fair amount of use ::)
I've had a wii for years - got one the day they were out - played zelda, & mario and nothing else....until the next zelda or mario game comes along :)
I'll get a PS3 as soon as theres more than a handful of good titles - until then - I wouldn't bother.
btw the way best console ever if you're interested (yes I'm a bit of a geek) was the Dreamcast - imo :y

Agreed. I cannot understand why it didnt take the market by storm. Too ahead of it's time by a few decades methinks (online gaming on consoles has only just got going, when DreamOn was already there).
First for online gaming, first with keyboard/mouse, graphics were incomprehensibly awesome for the time, the games original, and the unit itself even by todays standards is tiny.
I still have 4 dreamcast consoles - anyone want one? (sad I know).

to me its a no brainer witha ps3 you get a top quality blue ray player with a state of the art games consule thrown in for free, but the wii will get you sweaty and knackered which is not bad fun in a house full of fools ...get both ::) ::)

Sadly for those who bought BR players, Sony changed the spec at a hardware capabilities level between BR revisions. Its unlikely they will make the PS3 incompatible, well not until PS4 out (rumoured 2010).
Even with XP MCE, I never lost channel data :-/. XP MCE problem is it needs about 2 reboots a week if used heavily (XP ain't great constant in and out of standby, nor usb power management).
With VMC, only repeated problems I get are TV tuners sometimes get lost after coming from standby (its always one of the Haupauge dual tuners - I have 5 tuners in mine) which is hardware issue, the display (frontapanel) driver sometimes errors resuming from standby, requiring you to hit OK, and very rarely, IR controller stops responding at software level.
Unlike XP MCE, VMC I very rarely restart.
The big thing that breaks MCEs is installing those gay 'codec packs'. Only 1 extra codec needed for VMC, thats ffdshow. For hidef, if the film is in a wrapper, you need the unwrappers as well.
