As some might know I bought a donor mini to give it's life heroically in the creation of a Freestyle Buggy.
Also joined a mini owners forum to get genned up on the wee beasties.
One of my first cars was a mini -- and I have fallen in love all over again !!!!!!
Currently got my eye on a restored 998 cc Mini Studio 2 (G reg) and a Domino, built 1990 and on an H plate.
Still building the buggy tho ---- so "Brian" ( as I have called the donor) will still be sacrificed. Funnily I am feeling guilty about that too --- all HNO3's fault :( As we were trailering Brian home, he says (HNO£ not Brian) " Look at him, sat there thinking he's going to a good home to be restored, and you're goijng to KILL him!!"
I am looking at it more as radical cosmetic surgery -- a full body transplant!!!!!

In that case HC I hope that is a 1968 G mini as later ones will not fill you with that same loving feeling! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

no it would be a late one, Studio 2's were one of the special edition models produced around '89

I know Jay, and that is exactly the problem, for me anyway! ::) ::)
The later mini's such as 'Studio 2's' had lost the basic character of the original mini's that I learnt to drive in, which indeed is what HC fell in love with! :D :D :D :y

This is true ---- but original basic minis ( mine was an 850 ) in half decent condition require a mortgage to buy! Whilst not quite the same the later minis are still fun --- until BMW came along

It is in mint condition, but now I wish I had kept my 1968 Wolsley Hornet III (even with 85k on the clock in 1984 when I sold her) ::) ::) ::)

i used to run a mini owners club when i was in my 20's, at the time i had a few of them.......we were bloody overrun with them ;D ;D
I had a 1960 tartan mini seven deluxe, with the remote starter and magic wand, single clock with the white background, loved it
In addition i had a 1968 Mk1 in old English white a 970s in old English white and a mk2 1275s in BRG.....
all of them still exist today, all having been restored and the 970s is worth a packet

That hornet is lovely -- Thanks for the link Lizzie ----- even if I had the spare cash I would not buy it though. I would be very loathe to add to the 14500 odd miles ---- or even take her out and get her wet !!!! Too much of a responsibility !!!!

And Hydrospastic suspension, common to both at the time.
Me and a mate made another love child of the two. (About 20+ years ago here). My 1100 engine got grafted on to the gearbox of his original 'B reg' maroon 850. (Long gearstick and the starter button on the floor..)
We were well dissapointed - we expected a Cooper. We just got more softly made torque... :( It was fun at the time though.

When i was 18 a mate & i bought a 998cc Cooper (yes they did make them & few others besides the 1275). It was a 1968 red with a black roof, chrome remote change gear lever & central speedo calibrated to 100 mph as oppose to the usual 90mph one. As always it'd be worth a pretty penny today but we sold it on & it died in a police chase. :'(
Ironically it was registered OOF***G! Can't remember the 3 numbers though. 8-)

Mini, great car in the 60's and a crock of shite in the 80's......
-
My first road car was a Mini Traveller (Woody) 1963 reg 66 77 UP with a push button start button on the floor, had a vew since then, last one, on the road, was in 1990, bought one of the RSP Mini Coopers.
Fond memories ;D ;D ;D
-
Mrs Bitz first car was a 1964 mini (in1979) she put it through a hedge ,and herself in hospital, she still has a great fondness for old minis though,
my mates 92 year old mother in law has just given up driving and her mini ,which i think is a 40th anniversary special edition is going up for sale.dont know how many miles but i would imagine not many at all.

In the 80's Minis were sadly fitted with the A series+ engines which were never as good standard or tuned. Mid to late 70's they replaced the front subframe mounts with rubber which lost some of the tight direct feel of the 60's mini, hence many of us replacing them with nylon aftermarket bushes.
Later Minis were never what the earlier ones were but rotted just as quickly. Still love 'em though Mark but you do have a point. ::)

Mini with an OOF reg :y

Minis are great cars. I ran an owners club a few years ago and had a Mini with a 1380 turbo engine in it (taken from an MG Metro and bored out). It had around 130 BHP (which was a lot of fun) but it kept eating gearboxes at around one per month.
I became quite a dab hand at removing the engine just so that I could change the gearbox!! :o
-
The mini could have been a great car, when it was launched it was a great car but, 10 years later, no change, 20 years later no change and 30 years later no change.
If it been developed and had decent modern engines etc fitted, better safety, it might have kept up with the competition.
But, it didn't hence why for me, it is the symbol of the death of the UK motor industry.
This is why I personaly rather hate them and driving them to, yes they are very go-kart like but, there not comfortable, not well built, very poor in a crash and bloody noisey!
-
....., when it was launched it was a great car but, 10 years later, no change, 20 years later no change and 30 years later no change. .....
They changed from external door hinges to modern internal/hidden hinges! And didn't they change a floorpan seam around early on, to stop road spray from leaking in? :-/ :y :y :y ;D

there was a bloke in north oxfordshire some 25 years ago, with a mini van...
aside from minilites, and rubber it looked bog standard.
maniac had a 3.9 rover V8 , mid mounted, and a 4 wheel drive system....
jeeeezus it were scary.....

Sounds suicidal!
-
Being as no one has answered your question Kev, I will...
My wife had a mini nearly 20 years ago, a gold Mayfair, and it tried to kill me by setting on fire, so on my behalf you're just getting even.
So.. kill it and smile when you do it :)

Might also have helped if they'd actually worked out how much they cost to make and sold them for a profit!

price tag of 25000 £ converted..And they are really really precious
here..And owners are resistent to sell them.. :-/
