I'm not really surprised ,
some of the rules are daft,
it's all open to the NT's interpretation of the rules .
some stations want fails to earn work
but there are plenty of good testers who bother to read the manual, and apply common sense  :)

which is why owners should have the ability and knowledge( or know somebody who has) to check their own vehicles properly to know if they are roadworthy or not. and one reason in my opinion why the mot exemption for cars over 40 years old is a ridiculous and dangerous idea.

The assistant manager that also did testing was always asking me about the rules, we had to go to the sections and read through and then decipher what the meaning/intent was. Some of the rules are so ambiguous its laughable. What do you consider a supporting structural member , what's the normal wear limits on joints, what's excessive play in rubber bushes . Remember the person testing might have no mechanical training other than a quick course and no experience. Having been in the trade since 15 and a tester from 21 I like to think I gave a fair test but some of the modern compliant bushes have caught me out ( found to be okay when replaced ) . Place I took my mums car to (now I am retired) failed it on rust and bushes that in my opinion were just advisory

It's been said before but a hell of a lot of people class the MOT as a service.  ::)

Not really a service, but they do think it's more than a simple, mostly visual, limited inspection.

And a pass does not make it safe to use.
