Title: cars owned
Post by: raywilb on 28 August 2021, 01:44:15
a mate was asking me if i remember all the cars that iv,e owned ,  thought i would but was hopelessly wrong. my first car in 1964 was an Austin A35, 3 forward gear column change (i think). as my career was a merchant seaman i only used it whilst off ship but i would lend it to a guy so he could use it for family days out. we once changed the clutch & the bottom bolt & the next two were missing too . somebody had spot welded the steel gearbox to the bellhousing . i sold & the guy who bought it was disabled & had it full converted to complete hand controlled. his great grandson told me yesterday that it still gets driven albeit 2-3 times yearly. but iv,e been invited to go & see it, & its kept only 6 mls from where i live.

My first engine transplant was a1000cc engine ( approx) from an A35 into a Morris 1000 that had the crappy 803 ( approx) cc engine. Three speed gearbox to four speed. It became a death trap on its narrow crossplies.

My third was a ‘59 Zephyr lo-line. It was not as good as the previous one, a ‘53 Mk1 Consul, which was a a very well built car. I did several rallies in it, won a couple of special stages.

That wiper setup was crazy the faster you went the less vacuum in the manifold and the slower the wipers went👀👀

As daily drivers I think its 15 cars in 43 years. Then a few "do up and sell", a few (5 ?) Omega breakers, and several motorbikes.

I haven’t counted SWMBO’s, but a recount still only got 12. So not a great amount of depreciation for the amount of motoring. I’ve only ever had 2 new cars.
