Title: Used car prices getting stupid
Post by: STEMO on 05 October 2021, 16:00:44
I told you a while back what my wife's car was valued at on autotrader. It's gone up again. 66 plate astra 1.6 cdti automatic. We paid £10,100 for it 3.5 years ago with around 9000 miles on it. It now has just short of 40,000 miles on it.

(https://i.ibb.co/r4LTk8R/BC7-C8291-0-AB7-4-BB8-AA84-3479-C1-D74443.jpg) (https://ibb.co/jgxBh0P)

Crazy. But, of course, that's only a paper valuation. Whether someone would actually pay that.... :-\

Those suggestions are usually on the low side of achievable values.

A chap at work recently walked away from '17? plate Nissan Joke and took out finance on a pre registered '20 plate Joke for the same monthly payment.

He recently had a call from the dealer saying that because his car had increased in value, they would give him an extra £3k as a deposit against a brand spankers one, for the same monthly payment.

Obviously there's a fiddle somewhere, and what he doesn't appreciate is that the term will be longer, but he is a bit, er, special... He's not too far from retiring and was kicking off about not earning enough during furlough to cover his bills, just been kicked down from 12 hours to 8, so buying a new car on finance would be insane, even with an imaginary £3k off :-X

The 20 plate would not attract the 20% VAT, so the price difference between that and the new one should have been at least 30%.

No, not to buy new. But I'll bet nearly half of the cars on British roads are diesel.

Works manager where I work left his Aston in at a dealership to have a minor oil leak fixed a few months ago.
The next day the dealership called him and made him an offer on the car. He said he had no sensible choice but to tell them to keep the car and transfer the money into his bank account.

My sister and b-i-l bought a new Vovlo 4 years ago, the little one, D2 or 3
Only done 16k in it. WBAC offered them only £1600 less than they paid initialy for it.
they have ordered a new VW T-ROC. Looked at a ex demo car. It was 3k more than buying new with exactly the same options on it. The down side is they have to wait until mid December for delivery

even a base 1100 Escort is worth serious money. But it is at least 40 years old and rare. They are also built up by the reputation of the 'better' versions, which the Mondeo doesn't and will not get. Ford's marketing strategy still working decades after the car was sold? It's almost as if they knew what they were doing.

Many years ago I enjoyed a test drive in a Mondeo.

Can't quite recall now if it was an ST200, or ST220.

Pretty sure it was 3.0 litre, so probably the ST220

I remember it was very blue and quite fast, although it seemed to have poor torque at low revs.

Hello, I also think that the prices of used cars are just a parody, but if they have such high prices, people will not buy them, let them keep them for such a price, if they buy, they will increase the prices and it will go up all the time

I've just had another text from WBAC and they've now upped their offer on my extremely rare 2.2 Mondeo to £755!  ::)

I'm tempted to go along just to see how much they knock off when they actually see it!  ;D

I doubt they'll knock off more than £700. :)

Never a truer word spoken in jest M'Lud!  ::)  ;D

Being the Titty X it will have refinements not found on more humble cars. :y

Yes it has half leather for example!  ::)   ;D

I'm sure there used to be words that describe 'fake leather'........ words like  plastic and vinyl. :)

Don't sound as upmarket as Artico though. :)

MB Tex is old school vinyl. Artico is an modern refabricated leather hybrid material  ;)

They offered me £3750 for my astra. I was passing their portacabin , yes, portacabin, and decided to pop and ask the lad there what he thought they'd knock off for the few scrapes should I decide to go ahead. He had a quick look round and said "About £800 mate".
No thanks.

I'll wait until I get the oil warning every morning and I might drop it down and ask for an immediate bank transfer  ;D

I was looking at 2.0 diesel insignias around 17 plate (new shape). But, at around £13.5-15.5K, I think they are too much money. The high milers are more reasonable, but the one I've got is not that much different to them.

This is identical to my Mondeo. £3195!  :o

Well... I say identical it's got 35,000 less miles and looks in better condition, but even so, it's still a 14 year old Ford Mondeo!  :-X  :-\

Yep!  A local garage had an 08 silver Mondeo for about £3000 in the summer, 1.8 petrol, fairly basic spec as well.  It didn't hang around for long.  :)

Might put a cheeky ad on Gumtree... £2250?  :D

I mentioned a while back that wifey was keen to trade her astra for an A class, but that's not going to happen while things are the way they are. Took out another 12 month Vauxhall warranty on it  last week, £280 for a car in its fifth year isn't bad.

It’s not exactly mint, but equally it is presentable and use able. No rips in the seats, no real rust in the shell. 82,000, recently serviced, a years Mot and four brand new premium tyres.

Would consider offers around £1,250 :y Which is less than a knackered Focus with no MoT :D

Two things:
1) The parts on your Tata were much more expensive
2) The Tata is much more likely to go wrong than the astra.

Both of my XFR were 'reasonably reliable' :)

I'm guessing an old XJ6/12 thrown together in the seventies by Coventry communists would have produced more warranty claims.  :-X ::)
