Title: New Combi Boiler
Post by: TD on 10 November 2021, 18:58:52
Im having my 11yo combi boiler replaced with a new combi....

So what do the experts reckon I'll save on gas with the new one?

Nowt? / 5% / 10% / more?

The room stat needs changing (I can do that myself) as the one fitted lies! (I guess thats 11yo as well)
Its set at 28C and no way is it that warm in here, ok its nice and warm, but if it really was 28C, i'd be sweating like a gud un!

28C is Spain hot.

If your balls are not sweating profusely the whole thing is a con. ;)

Yours is a vaillant, if I remember, Dave. As you know they're pretty good boilers, can't it be repaired?

Our boiler is at least 17 years old . It does play up from time to time but they are very simple and therefore easy to fix.

Well, it works , but as its over 7yo i can get a grant to replace it, grant is not by gas supplier either... :)

But prob costing you a lot more to run than a new one and as gas prices are rising loads  :(

Well if your getting a new one for free then Happy Daze!  :y

Mines a 27 year old Potterton Profile which glugs and burps a bit from time to time, but  it's still going strong and unless I get offered a free one will stay where it is.  :)

Actually, even if I was offered a free one I'd have to think about it, as the modern condensing boilers are nowhere near as reliable.  :-X

Potterton Promax is a condensing combi ,about 90% efficient IIRC
if it's serviced and adjusted correctly ,rads balanced etc you won't see much in savings on fuel bills with a newer gas boiler .

is the grant is 100%, FREE MONEY* ,no cost to you ?
or so much off an install ? in which case a local indy may be cheaper even without a grant and just your contribution ,

Thermostat is a cheap and easy fix if it bothers you reading high  :-\
put an accurate thermometer next to the stat and see what the temp really is  ;)

FREE MONEY* is not free ,someone has to pay  :-X

It also runs at low (in the red) water pressure all the time. Ive tried opening the valves underneath the boiler to let more water in, but opening the valves does cock all!

Can you hear the water going in, Dave? If you can it means you may have a leak in your system. That boiler really isn't that old. Mine is a similar model and still runs like new after eight years.
Is there an isolator to the cold feed to the boiler?

Somehow i doubt its ever been serviced sinced its been installed tbh.
I remember the vaillant i had in my last place used to run its burner high to get upto temp, then reduce the burner to keep water temp constant, only shutting the burner off when room stat called for off.
This potterton burner roars aways, then shuts off burner when water temp reached then repeats a few mins later.

I realise someone pays.....in this instance its a charity....which no doubt you have probably heard of and dealt with  ;)

Probably been plumbed in backwards. By the landlord...

Seems to be been installed by Miller Homes or a subcontractor at least going by labels stuck on boiler...

Page 6 of the manual clicky  (https://www.gentoogroup.com/media/1048876/promax-combi-user-guide.pdf) shows the filling loop .
2 taps need opening either end of the loop
WRAS regs include the fitting of a check valve to stop boiler water going back into drinking water, this could be stuck shut also .

if you suffer low water pressure you may not get the required 1 to 1.5 bar required
(sometimes filling very late at night when local pressure is highest ,due to low demand, works)

that said ,just read your reply about it never being serviced ,  ::)
might be wise to let the charity have a look if it's no cost to you
condensing boilers do need regular service ,adjustment to work efficiently

10 years of no service will probably mean the boiler is ****ed anyway now  :(
so ignore me  ;D
so let the Gas Safe "engineers" deal with it ,especially if it's FREE  :)

No you carnt hear water going in....and if there is a isolator for the cold feed its well hidden!
This flat i bought is 11 years old (hence the boiler age) and all inside walls are plasterboard so pipework is hidden behind the plasterboard

most installs use a standard filling loop (and it is directional / one way ) both taps need opening temporarily to "top up"

this will probably be the same on your new boiler too  ;)

So...had a phone call today....boiler man is coming Monday to change the boiler...
so i called the charity to check it was free....they said yes....
Then had another phone from plumber to arrange a time which we did....also asked
him if it was free....he said yes as well....so i guess it is free....to me anyway  :y

Well.....Boiler man has been.....didnt need a filling loop....filling loop valve was underneath the the kitchen sink!!
so, buy turning that he got it working  :)
But its now running over pressure....which he said wasnt a concern...ie it wasnt going to blow up.
He reckon the expansion vessel is bunged up....hence running over pressure.
He's put me down for a new boiler....which maybe in a week or so time  :y

At least im warm again  :y
