I have to go to Londinium on Friday and being an eco warrior I thought I'd save the planet and go by train! :)
Had a look online and saw the prices! Fooooking hell! £73.60 return! :o It's only about two hours forty minutes to London Waterloo, so no wonder everyone drives! ::)
Undaunted, I went to the station to see if there were any cheaper deals and the ticket fella is going to sell me 3 different tickets for the way up, from A to B, B to C and C to D, which will save me about £6.50. :y That will cover the days car parking at the station... ::)
Alternatively, I might drive to somewhere ghastly like Woking and train it with the plebs from there. :-\

Now consider the hours that you'll spend looking at the car in front, and how many organs you need to sell to pay for the parking. if you can find anywhere near your destination.
Driving into London is for idiots.

This is why I have no intention of driving into London Nick. :)
It's been a while since I took the train though so I was shocked at the cost. :-\

I can remember when my mum used to take me for a day out in London.
She used to drive, park up on the outskirts where there was a tube line handy and we'd tube it in ;)
-
My ticket today was £17.70 with no tube.
I could have parked outside the passport office... 🤔

I think those days are long gone Dave, it's all residents parking permits and Sidick's various charges these days. ::)

Indeed, agreed. To make it worse, if your car does not conform to the ULEZ limits, you pay £12.50, and if entering the central zone, it is another £15, both charges per day. Once you set that, and the parking charges, and sitting in a queue, against the cost of that rail fare, I know what I would do,and I used to love driving in and around London. ;)

You could always park here and get the train from Swindon :y

I might not even charge you ;D

£27.50 plus fuel and parking vs £75 on the train... 🤔 It's a close call...
-
Assuming you're using the Exeter-Yeovil-Sailsbury-Basingstoke-Waterloo line, it might take 2 hours. Or 2 weeks. As of this morning the line was still closed following two trains 'bumping' into each other just outside Sailsbury on Oct31st.

It really isn't.
If I get a suitable train, most of the London stations are 45 minutes away. 45 minutes in the car might get me to New Cross. Another 45 minutes and I might see the river. Then there's parking, paying for it and the LEZ and all the other crap.
Driving isn't an option, unless I'm ringing at Walworth on a Sunday.
I've been driving in London for over 30 years, and the Chelsea Cruises were the only time that driving was the only choice.

Strangely the train fare from Swindon to Paddington is about the same for the 1 hour trip as my 2 hours, forty minutes to Waterloo. :-\

Yes, Axminster to Waterloo Malc. :y Apparently the Salisbury tunnel should reopen tonight, but I'm not buying my tickets till Friday morning just in case. ::)
Plan B is drive to Dorchester and train from there. :y

When we drive to go and watch YTFC lose in London, it's normally A303-M3-A316 to Richmond, and park there in the Old Deer Park car park just off the A316. It's about £10 for all day parking, plus another tenner for the tube travel. You do have to be careful to make sure there is no rugger on at Twickers or other nearby stadia though. From there it's a short walk to Richmond station for either the District tube line or National rail into Waterloo.
I've also used the parking at Osterley on the Piccadilly Line, which is cheaper but more of a ball ache to get to.
-
Thanks Malc, I'll check that out. :y
Although on my own it'll be £40-50 in fuel anyway, so I'll probably just let the train take the strain! :)

I suspect that your train fare is similar to mine rather than £75 though ;)

£111 off peak day return from Nottingham (about 1hr 50 journey), drive 20 mins to Grantham and its £55 and only about 1hr.
So your trip sounds pretty cheap >:(

Thanks Mark, I feel better now! ;D

Train from Wakefield this aft, return tomorrow aft, £65.20 on Trainline.

That would mean spending the night. In Lundun. :o
-
Chiltern Slug is well over £70 for a return (40mins each way), and £8.50 parking. So your prices look fairly reasonable.
Driving is usually the best option. For me, going into the centre of the City of London, its about 15mins longer, the parking isn't that much more than Chiltern's prices, and even with the congestion and ULEZ charges, ends up being a similar price. And you can guarantee a seat on a car, its covid secure, and you're not contaminated by the great unwashed. No brainer.

I frequently have to spend many nights there, and the world's biggest shithole I have ever witnessed is Wembley (High Street, not the bit round the stadium).

Wembley?? You must be joking.
Head for Canning Town, Poplar or Limehouse. Thamesmead if you're feeling really brave and your satnav is up to date.
-
Wembley, not Wembley Stadium. One is fairly posh for West London, the other is a shithole even by Hell standards.
-
Since moving I still need to go there now and again, usually an overnight stay.
£60 open return with Senior railcard. 4 hour one way journey
If there's two of us I drive, Free parking at hotel in suburbs (nice suburbs not s***thole suburbs).
