I buy the argument that more energy is happening in the upper atmosphere much more frequently with cosmic rays than can happen at CERN. If it was possible, it would have happened.
Some of the early nuclear physicysts thought it possible that an atomic chain reaction could devour the earth. Luckily, they were wrong.
The handy thing about my argument is...
If I am wrong nobody will have the time to register the thought -

before our atoms are blown to quarks.

Any driver who can't see a pothole that size an avoid it shouldn't be on the road!
And I don't think you need to worry about the end of the world on Wednesday. All they are doing is getting the first proton beam going. In a few months time, they will fire up the second beam, and a bit later they'll start colliding the beams. That's when you need to worry... :(
