We can hope. I like to be optimistic

Question. Easter Presents. Is this a new thing? Chocolate eggs, yes. But presents, like at Christmas? I suspect commercial opportunism here, or am I being a tad cynical.

Over the last few years we have gone completely the other way. Easter means absolutely nothing to anyone who doesn't believe in fairies, so we totally ignore it. No eggs, no nothing.

It is big here in Spain. Deeply religious country.

Even for non religious folk, the Easter processions are a sight to behold. The heavy religious icons are taken out of the churches and carried by a brotherhood around a long route. The costumes and rituals are impressive. Much eating , drinking and getting together also happens. Not much commercialisation though Lidl does have a tiny range of Easter eggs.

Easter was like a second Christmas when I was growing up. Gatherings of the clans usually at the Grandparents, loads of food and drink, with a big sit down roast turkey dinner on Easter Sunday.  :y

Today I went to the supermarket and was perplexed to find it closed.... Ah yes it's Easter Sunday!  ::)  ;D

Happy Easter!  :)

In 1976 you would be able to fill a dozen petrol tanks for £114.......and if you were deluded enough buy a brand new Marina coupe for about £1000.

New house for about £7000.

Be pleased you do. Britain ( and the Victorians) gave the world so much. Here in Spain - a metric country, we still buy pipe in inch or fractions thereof , diameter. Known as pulgadas. Car tyres are mostly in so many inches diameter. I still use mpg after all these years but admit I do also know how many km I do to a litre. This is mostly for conversation with Spaniards.
More obscure stuff like BSF are also to be found. Ditto strange nut sizes on machinery. It does make me smile.

Stolen from elsewhere and it made me chuckle.  >:D

Christians say not to practice witchcraft or astrology, but celebrate the resurrection of a dead guy on the Sunday after the first full moon of the equinox and then they drink wine and bread, as his blood and body and incant over their animal sacrifices before they feast!

When I'm Emperor of the entire world (coming quite soon  ::) ) . . . .

Total metrication will imposed on pain of death or serious physical torture. Odd fractions of an inch are just bonkers, totally random fluid measurements (8 pints to the gallon etc), 1,760 yards to the mile. Who the f*** thought all these up? I have a theory that it was just to give kids something to learn parrot fashion at school.

I used to sell medical equipment (made in the USA). On some items the length was metric (cms. EG 70 cms) diameter was a decimal of an imperial (EG  .038 of an inch). It is said that a space shuttle blew up due to such confusion, not surpised.

Watched an American hot rod show the other week and they were stuck as they had no metric spanners , strange as GM and Chrysler and Ford have been metric for years!!
Went to mums for Easter lunch yesterday, not traditional as we had roast duck with roast veg!!

You could say that Britain is slowly inching towards metrification .....  ::)

(8 pints to the gallon etc) and why does America have 16fl oz in a pint & we have 20?  ???
Title: Re: EASTER
Post by: STEMO on 18 April 2022, 11:04:26
Because Americans hate, and I mean hate, to be told that they speak English, not American. So they alter spellings and change the names of things. Bonnet, Hood......Pavement, Sidewalk..etc.
Even when a word is spelled the same, i.e. Tuesday, they still pronounce it differently, Toosday.
They also don't want to think that they use our system of measurements, basically for the same reason.

Basically, they are insecure tossers  ;D

As does Norfolk ;D Not to mention Satdy or Mundy.

The Americans actually speak olde English, it is us that have bastardised it over time ;), and you can thank the Plymouth Bretheren for that.

The weights and measures thing is probably a side effect of taxation, effectively they have 'more' in a thing, even though the thing is smaller than ours, the more things they buy, the more tax they would pay.  :-\

Actually, after falling down a rabbit hole, it transpires that the American system predates the 'imperial' system although they have a shared heritage which predates the Romans...

Both the British Imperial and United States customary systems of measurement derive from earlier English systems

I really don't care where the earlier English systems came from. Unless American Indians had a system in place before we got there, then it's the yanks that bastardised what they took with them from here. Fickin colonists.
